I have been a member of a pretty good membership site for the past year and a half. In this membership site they have a keyword tool that helps you find long tail keywords. Unfortunately, I have to cancel my subscription b/c I can no longer afford it. Is there a free tool that helps you find long tail keywords for free? I have tried using the Adwords tool, but never had any luck with it, especially when they changed it. Sure it gives me a lot of keywords, but not long tail keywords that I can find with the keyword tool inside of my membership site. I know there are tons of free tools for almost everything out there, but I haven't been able to find one that finds long tail keywords. Any help would be appreciated.
I am surprised that you did not find your keyword with Google. I will explain, maybe you will have some luck this time: Use Google keywords tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). You should target keywords which have more than 2000 'broad' searches per month AND which have less than 50,000-60,000 'phrase' match results. (use the keyword you get from Google keyword tool and search for the keyword with quotation marks and look at the number of results). Any keyword with searches below 2000 will not be profitable enough. And any keyword which has results in google above 60000-70000 will be too tough. It doesn't matter if it is a long tail (more words) or a short tail (less words) keyword. If the particular keyword meets the above criteria, then you should be ok. But that said, MOST of the short tail keywords are gone now. They do not meet the above criteria. They went like 10 years ago. So you will have to concentrate on long tail keywords.
No offense, but using Google's Keyword Tool is not about luck. Here are a sample on how I use Google's Keyword Tool: I just did keyword research based on website URL, I enter: http://forums.digitalpoint.com First result come up with many sort tail, the longest one is: "how to increase web traffic" I click "add" for that keyword and google store it on the sidebar. From there I click button "Get More Related Keywords" . The result is more longtail keywords related to the one I add previously. Here is one example: "how to increase web traffic for free" >> It's a 7 words phrase! Shoot my PM if you still have questions regarding this issue. Regards, Sam ps:If your browser showing the new version of keyword tool, you can prefer to go back to the old version by clicking the "Previous interface" text link on above right of your screen.
I think that this is a good way to bust the misconception that most people have nowadays. People read the study that says long tail keywords drive more conversions and they go and try to find long tail keywords even when short tails are just as good. Thanks for the tips here. It's going to go in handy.
