    I think they do it by writing content on a topic where there is money, like loans or mortgages and then get a trickle of traffic through some coincidental long-tail key phrases.

    Congrats buddy... i am also new in the industry and I still remember how happy was I after receiving first check... now my daily earning varies between 3-7$ a day with my 6 months old blog.. my target is 1000$ a month in 2 years.... and I am sure its achievable :)
