2 campaigns, same industry.

Hi all, I have 2 sites. One I market properly, the other I use for experimental purposes. I currently sub all work out for the main site (design, SEO, marketing, socail network) and do not get involved too much.

My 2nd site is my experimental site. I desperately need to run an adwords campaign on it but currently have a campaign set up on my main site (this is one part of marketing that I do have sole control over)

It seems google do not like one account to have more than 1 campaign bidding on the same keywords.

Would it be a solution for me to pause the main campaign? IF not, would I need to delete the main campaign to allow me to run my 2nd campaign for a period of time?

    Thank you in advance,

    Steve

Yeah, you can pause your current campaign and start a new one for the same set of keywords. But remember that your Quality Score for your current campaign might be affected when it goes live again. QS is adjusted depending on various factor including your overall adwords account performance. So good luck!

Thanks for that. Just to be sure, do you mean take care with the new campaign? I was hoping to pretty much do a carbon copy of the exisitng campaign which has approx 20% at 10/10, 75% at 7/10 and 5% at 6/10. Then again I have only be doing this 2 weeks and I gather scores can change quite rapidly in the early stages.

When you start your new campaign the adwords system gives a new QS to the keywords based on your new landing page. But when you stop the new campaign and restart your old campaign then the QS may be affected, if your keyword did not perform well when the new campaign was running. Hope I have made sense to you.

For example, you are bidding for keyword "shoes" in old campaign (say campaign name is shoe1) and you have a QS of 10/10. You want to pause campaign shoe1 and start shoe2 for the same keyword. If QS for the keyword "shoes" is also 10/10 in campaign shoe2, then when you stop shoe2 and restart campaign shoe1, the QS would not be affected. But if the QS in shoe2 was less, then the future QS for keyword "shoes" will be affected.

I am no expert in adwords, I am basing my comments on my experience. QS is so complex that one day you have 10/10 and next day your ad is not even shown. It could be for various reasons. But a well optimized campaign will mean overall consistent QS.

    Thank you for that info.

Anyway, so far so bad. I have copied the campaign over to my new campaign and site but all of my ads have been classed as adult :(

I think this means that they will get next to zero exposure. The shop is a lingerie shop. My original campaign had about 5 of 35 ads classed as adult, the rest were classed as non family which was fine.

The difference I think is that if the status is family approved, then the user needs to opt away from the google default search settings to AVOID seeing the ads, which is not a major problem. However, with adult classification, the user has to opt away from google default settings to see the ads.

Does anybody know the correct way to go about trying to rectify this? It seems that the classification you receive can be very hit and miss. Both sites are similar in terms of landing page and content. Should I delete and redo ads? Or will the circumstances which gave me the adult rating be exactly the same?

The site does sell adult toys but so does the other. Also, big spenders with google in the same industry have no problems getting far racier ads through, hopefully proving that I can use adwords without being classed as purely adult.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Steve

Its unclear if you have 2 accounts, but i would separate your products (sites) into 2 different accounts and link them with the master account (MCC)

Are you saying that this may be a legitimate way to run 2 similar accounts at the same time or are you saying that QS for each account are not impacting eachother?

Yes you can run multiple accounts, ive run as many as 3 or 4 in the same industry. Make sure the accounts are linked with the mcc. I'm not sure if the qs of one account effects the other, but you will have some cannibalization simply because you are competing with yourself.

I thought myself that you cant have multiple accounts, but you can and yes they have to be liked to one MCC account. Just have to run campaigns for different websites (obviously)
