Should I use Shared, Dedicated or VPS server for my Blog?

I'm new to the field of professional blogging, as in blogging on self-hosting platforms such as Wordpress, Typepad, etc. Since I've decided to launch a blog on my own domain, I would like to know what kind of server is best to start with: Shared, Dedicated or VPS?

I heard VPS is more advantageous, but also that it is best utilized by the technically skilled, which I'm not. My programming skills are limited to basic html at best. So, I'm still unsure as to what server would ideally suit me. What do you guys suggest?

Btw, budget is not an issue to me, I'm ready to pay extra if it is actually worth it. what do you guys recommend for someone in my situation.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

i think it's best for you to start with a shared hosting, later....when you have improved your skill in linux, you can take a vps, then when your visitor increase significantly, you can have a dedi :D

    just my $0.02

definitely shared host is the way to start. You can start on your local machine with wamp server, then upload it to a free host like byet.net, or something other reliable host. After you will be enough traffic and understand how to install, modify, etc etc, you can get a paid host.

Domain should be registered through a registrar, like godaddy.

    Good luck!

my point of view for a blog in particular is that you don't really need to look to upgrading from shared to vps until you're blog starts getting about 1000 visits per day. Particularly if its a pretty light weight blog, you shouldn't have any problem with hosting on a shared server, and you'll be saving at least $500 a year.

When you start a new blog you don't need VPS nor dedicated server. Shared web hosting is what you need because:

    1. Your weblog will not need too much resources.
    2. You don't need to administer your server with shared hosting plan - your knowledge of just HTML is ok if you use shared hosting, but you need to know more for using VPS or dedicated server.
    3. Some shared hosts have script installers which can install the wordpress automatically for you.

Start with shared hosting. Jumping to VPS/Dedicated leaves you with unconsumed resources = overhead cost not needed. As you had stated, system administration is certainly not your forte and you definitely do not want to meddle with it. Should you need to upgrade to VPS/Dedicated Server in the future, find a provider that offers system management with your server.

I agree with marblehost here. To get started with any project shared web hosting account is enough. But at the same time you need to remember about possibility of growth and chose your web hosting provider according to that.

Start with shared and move to a VPS when you require more resources.

I would really recommend that you get a paid host, both Godaddy and HostGator have very cheap starter packs, take their smallest package and buy a couple of months to get even some more rebates. Being a paying customer always trumphs being a freebie client. These are stable companies to start out at, easy to use and all you need to do is focusing on your blog and not the hosting. By paying for your service you are a little more certain that it will still be there tomorrow, so noot everything is lost in some silly crash or so. That security is well wort about $5 a month, which most starter packs costs.

You should just go for Shared host - which are also the cheapest. Shared web hosting is for hosting website, then VPS's and Dedicated servers are for hosting bigger things such as game servers.

my opinion...use a shared server hosting but is recommended to have a separate ip, no shared ip. There are several providers that offer separate ips for sites even on a shared server. One of them is http://www.ixwebhosting.com/index.php/v2/pages.hostingPlans but there are other too. I know ixwebhosting because I used them in the past.

Wordpress can consume large amount of CPU time and RAM with some nasty plugins, so dedicated will 100% suite your needs, still it will not be cheap

sharehosting is more than enough for a new blog, I run a couple blogs from my one hosting account at hostgator.
