Pinging is used to notify various online services that a blog has been updated. Typically a search engine will follow the links and index the new blog post quicker as a result. Obviously people now spam the pinging services to death and they are now used to ping just about everything, but they were originally designed for notification that a blog has updated as far as I am aware.

Pinging is an outdated method in MY honest opinion, from my experience. You better off leveraging the power of RSS!!!

PING is just a way to tell, not a way to rank

But isn't pinging a good way to get your obscure articles indexed and get your backlinks recognised by Google. This is part of the SEO process surely?

Basically, blog pinging notifies all major blog directories in one go so that everyone knows about your latest or recently updated blogs. It saves you the time of having to do each site manually. The Blog and Ping technique is an often overlooked SEO technique. Pinging notifies a number of services that keep track of weblogs and publish them. By pinging, you let the services know that your blog has been updated. This increases your blog's popularity and helps blog search engines crawl and index your site properly.

    Here's a list of auto-pinger sites:
    1. PingOMatic.com
    2. PingMyBlog.com
    3. FeedPing.com
    4. AutoPinger.com
    5. FeedShark.com
    6. Pingler.com

However as suggested above another useful method is to harness the power of your RSS feed using services like twitterfeed or blog plugins to report your posts to sites like twitter and facebook can help with SEO particularly as google crawls these sites.

Seems like the folks have said everything, But I still have a tip for you.

If you're running a wordpress blog, Everytime you edit your post, Wordpress will ping all the sites in your ping list, Which by time may result in banning your site from those ping sites thinking you're spamming.

I think it is called MaxblogpingOptimizer. I think it prevents the post from being overpinged when edited or something like that.

Anyone above already said well about Ping alrady. :) I would like to add a little. You do not have to do ping manually via external websites if you are using Wordpress blog platform. They are ping feature enabled on default and will automate ping every time new content has been added. The manually ping from external websites would be wasted.

Pinging is a great way to inform SE's of the changes/updation to your site content. I think it to be absolutely necessary... particularly if your site is not a blog and hence not using wordpress which automatically does it for you!

As always... use this feature wisely, as like everything else... anything in excess is bad here too! :)

    Regards,

In my own experiences, pinging is necessary for informing search engines of updates on your sites or blogs for faster indexing purpose, especially when your sites have not yet got a high PR like 5 or above. Of course, blogs on wordpress or other hot services would come with built-in pinging service for this purpose.

    Have a nice day,

Pinging does have SEO value as it informs search engines about new content/pages on your site. While it may not mean that the SE bots will crawl your new pages right away, you can be sure that they will get crawled and indexed sooner than the pages that SEs do not know about.

Pinging simply lets blog search engines know that your content has been updated. This results in your site being crawled faster by the relevant blog spiders. If it is not a blog there really is no point pinging the page.

There are loads of things you can do from an SEO point of view to make a site more visible, the problem is you either have to learn it or pay someone to implement it.

if you are hoping to use a blogging platform to build a website around then pinging allows you to notify various news and information services about updates to your website. These sites will then syndicate your content to a wider audience.
