I used to love Hotbot personally.. Its a shame the search engine market (big boys) is like a desert compared to how it used to be in the good olde days!
Yeah Excite I barely remember that. I think it was metacrawler or something, but that was a meta-searchengine. Man you guys must be as old as me (257+ Internet years)
lycos, hotbot, alltheweb, altavista, yahoo, aol, ask jeeves, excite, web crawler.... This where some popular SEs long time ago.
A couple of old search engines that I still remember : 1. Hotbot 2. Excite 3. Web Crawler 4. Netscape Search 5. MetaCrawler 6. Ask Jeeves 7. Dogpile 8. AltaVista 9. Lycos 10. AOL Search 11. Infoseek 12. All the Web - Dynashox -
Here is what I remember from the first reading on "Search Engine Optimization For Dummies 1st Edition (Peter Kent / 2004)" Dogpile / Lycos / AskJeeves / MSN / Teoma / Altavista / Netscape / MetaCrawler / Infoseek
No I believe that the original "Big 8" was (not in any order - around 1996): Altavista, Lycos, Hotbot, AOL, MSN, Excite, Yahoo and Infoseek Correct me if I'm wrong guys (research for an ebook)
Isn't Netscape Search was big at that time when Netscape Navigator browser was still around? - Dynashox -
I remember that Netscape was pretty big to, but the only two I don't really remember is MSN and AOL. But Internet Explorer is automatically installed on PC's and it's default is the MSN searchengine. And I'm 99.5% sure it was AOL as well, this was when they were still a paid subscription and kept sending out their floppy disks for a free trial even though you were already a subscriber for over a year. As I remember harddrives were 1.3 MB and your computer was obsolete by the time you got it out of the box. And Mark Joyner came out with that infamous "Searchengine Tactics" (which he gave away for free) that was really cutting edge info at the time, but these days would get you banned. Thanks
Not sure this was ever part of the Big 8 but while we are taking a trip down memory lane I remember "Veronica" ...and yes I am surely the oldest of all.
webcrawler was massive. my personal favorite was dogpile.com altavista and lycos was big. I got into the internet game in 94/95 and there was just yahoo and perhaps lycos
