I am using /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/ permalink. Try out that one.

Sorry, but this is the most stupid one. Awful for visitors, awful for search engines.
Using the category/postname one is very good, but personally i only use postname

I recommend domain/post-name/post-id in case you foresee to have multiple posts with the same name. Othewise you can skip the post-id.

Changing permalinks should be done when you start your wordpress blog, because then it will not require google to re-index your site. I said it, because it happened to my blog. I have the /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/ and i changed /%postname/. It needed a few weeks until my site appear in Google again. But it's never too late to change, but then stick with it and be patient and don't be panic if your site disappears from google for a few weeks.

If you are confused, you can try all permalinks which are suggested here in local wordpress (install wordpress locally) and if you are happy with how it looks then you can decide which one and apply it to your site online.

Here are some videos on how:
    1. Install wordpress locally in windows.
    Or Mac.
    2. Setting better permalink to /%postname%/
    3. Setting permalink to /%Postname.html as well as your pages, example, about.html
