Simply put, affiliate programs, also called associate programs, are arrangements in which an online merchant Web site pays affiliate Web sites a commission to send them traffic. These affiliate Web sites post links to the merchant site and are paid according to a particular agreement. This agreement is usually based on the number of people the affiliate sends to the merchant's site, or the number of people they send who buy something or perform some other action. Some arrangements pay according to the number of people who visit the page containing their merchant site's banner advertisement. Basically, if a link on an affiliate site brings the merchant site traffic or money, the merchant site pays the affiliate site according to their agreement. Recruiting affiliates is an excellent way to sell products online, but it can also be a cheap and effective marketing strategy; it's a good way to get the word out about your site.

    1. In order to start in affiliate marketing, you have to first of all have a decent volume of traffic-generating website.
    2. You have to identify the profile of your visitors in order to figure out what kind of products and services you could sell them to generate commission
    3. You have to contact Publisher networks to find the best offers - try Lidango.com - I am working with them for years now, they have double commissions of some products in comparison with other companies
    4. Launch a campaign

Basically it is not useful for your site promotion but it is useful for you to monetize your website. Choose an affiliate program that suites the theme of your website.

Affiliate marketing is a type of online marketing strategy that works through an affiliate program. When a particular website owner is in an affiliate program with a merchant, that website owner places advertisements on the website that help market, sell, or simply advertise the merchant's products and brands. As part of the affiliate program agreement, the website owner gets a share of the profits on conversions made through the said advertisements.

If you have an attractive product or membership to sell, yes - then you can recruit some affiliates, split the earnings from the signups/sales with them and they will continue to send sales and traffic your way.

Basically, they promote you, your product or your site in return for either a fixed fee per sale, per visitor sent or as a percentage of the earnings. If your site is small, unknown and you don't have an attractive product, you need to pay affiliates more to even care about selling your product, because they will evaluate you. They know that they can sell, if you or your product doesn't sell, they will go with someone else instead. A good affiliate program can help a good product to sell really well, a bad product will probably not even be promoted because the affiliates sees no benefit in trying to sell bad or shitty products/services or the likes.

If you still want to start an affiliate program, you can start here: http://www.clickbank.com and read more under the Vendors link.

If you are asking about becoming an affiliate of someone else then:

It won't help promote your OWN website. You will have to promote you self.

Select a niche (Eg. Weight loss, Internet Marketing, Personal Development etc.)

You sign up as an affiliate within the niche you are in. For Example in Click bank (http://www.clickbank.com/marketplace.htm) you search in the marketplace for products within your niche. And signup for an affiliate for the product you like/is popular.

What you will do is make a free valuable gift (for your niche) to give to your visitors to your website in return for their email address.

Then You will provide further value like newsletters/articles.

Finally you will introduce them to the affiliate product that you signed up for.

You will see that by first providing value, and not selling immediately, people will buy!

Otherwise If you are asking about being a vendor (you have your own product to sell) and offering your product to an affiliate network (like http://www.clickbank.com), then sure you will see an increase in your sales as YOUR affiliates increase.
