As long as you are legit and do not rely on blackhat techniques, I think you are safe. However, I've also heard of people who claimed their accounts got disabled for no apparent reason. I think these people are not telling the full story of their marketing techniques or the nature of their website.

But as long as you dont break any of Google AdSense rules and you're flexible to change and are willing to learn then yes it is possible to use AdSense as a long-term business. I can only advice you to stick to the rules and pray nothing will go wrong but no I would not rely totally on Adsense as my income to pay the rent. I see adsense as an extra opportunity to make more money but again sometimes they decide to close accounts because of click attacks other times for people not being up2date with their terms. I would recommend you to use Adsense as "Extra" cash. opportunity.

Just speaking from what I have heard of others, I wouldn't say Adsense is a secure business, even if you follow the rules 100%. You might stick with the same account for 10 years, but you can lose it tomorrow as well, whenever Google decides they don't like what you're doing. This is why you need to split up your income. But life is filled with risks, you can get fired from your normal job as well so..
