Can someone explain how this page is #1 on google:

edit: can't post links, check the first link on google images for "tiger". the site starts with the word ecoles

It does not have the word tiger anywhere on the page, and you can't even click on the image... how can this possibly be number one

The actual image is called "tiger-info0[1].gif".

So google thinks it's the best image on the internet for tiger just because of that? It must have other links coming in with tiger or something, maybe articles? Is there any way to find out what sites are linking to a particular site?

Looks like a tiger to me, I don't see why you're so upset.

No. This is not because of image filename solely but because of domain authority. I have seen many images can rank high for broad keyword in Google images search that do not have keyword in filename or have content placed around them.

P.S. As long as the image is Tiger, I do not see why you are so upset, or anything wrong with Google image search anyway. :)

It's upsetting knowing how much work I put into my sites, and then seeing garbage sites like that beat me with no work involved on their part...

Why are you so upset ? Yes it's garbage site but it's done something right to get listed higher.. Eventually Google will catch up to their techniques if they've used any blackhat methods and remove it.
Raise yourself so higher that you don't have to compare your website to these Shi*ty websites.

If you do a web search for tiger, you will see the same image in the SERPs in first place, except the image links back to howstuffworks.com. Maybe they like the pic!

Also the ecoles site has the image in a td along with some text (hidden from the students because its a spelling test,,, Ctrl + A to highlight the text)

<td width="20%">
<p align="center">tiger<img border="0" src="images/tiger-info0[1].gif" width="80" height="111"></td>

Code (markup):
So the image is somewhat isolated in a td, the name of the image is tiger-info0 and has one descriptive word "tiger"
Its not watered down with other text (like "tiger at the zoo on Saturday") so Google can easily work out what it is.
Also there use to be an image naming thing you could volunteer to do where two people were shown the same image at the same time and the had to type descriptive words for it... images were tagged with any words that matched.

Cheers
James
