I would go for the i7, if you can afford it.

I would go with the i7, as it is the most powerful quad core processor around, and really great if you do a lot of graphics/video work (good for games as well.) It all depends on what you plan to use your PC for - for general purpose work and light gaming, a Core2 Duo or Phenom will work just fine. There's no need to buy the most powerful processor out there if you don't have a need for it.

AMDs best Phenom II X4 is probably quite close to i7 and about equal to the C2Q in terms of performance. Avoid the Athlons and the old Phenoms, they are quite slow compared to what Intel has.

I Had This Debate With My Friends long ago.. here are the main features

    Intel:
    Hyperthreading - Hardcore Performance
    High Price
Heats Up A Lot But if You Can Afford Cooling Solution No Problemo

    AMD
It Uses A Unique Architecture Which Gives It Good Performace
    Decent Price
    Good Performace.

    Conclusion:
If Your Hardcore About 2-3 Frames Per Second On Games Buy An Intel If YOu Can Afford It
    Otherwise AMD!

Being a hardware enthusiast, I can say that with AMD its best price + performance ratio. AMD processors perform fairly well for what you pay.. I mean you could essentially get a quad core processor for under $130(CAD), now that is insane.. infact you could get a 6 core AMD processor at under $250(CAD), where as an Intel 6 Core would run you about $1200(CAD)..

Its no secret though that Intel processors at the moment provide the best performance, even the Core i5 outperform most of the AMD processors available.. but again on the Intel platform hardware is more expensive, for example : processor + motherboard..

But Phenom II's actually outperform the older Core 2 Quad processors from intel hands down in majority of the benchmarks.. and the overclocking capabilities on AMD are quite good, you could run your 3.0GHZ Phenom II Quad Core processor @ 4.0GHZ with ease..

Also as far as gaming is concerned AMD performs pretty much the same as a Core i7 920 for example after being overclocked, so If your a gamer I would def go for an AMD processor, it'll be more then enough.. But if your into video encoding then Intel would be the Ideal choice.

Tom' hardware has excellent reviews with comparison charts.
Get an i7, with DDR3 OCZ or some such RAM(1666mz), and good graphics card.
prolly 20-30% faster than any AMD system.

    For 30-50% higher price
