tried to FTP and i cannot connect - its been 80 hours or so and still i cannot access the site or FTP.

    ideas???

    Sorry to hear that.

Can you access the site using HTTP?

Can you list your URL here?

Are you able to access the site or FTP via the IP for your domain itself? If so, it does sound like there may be a DNS issue. As mentos stated, can you list your URL?

You can try using IP first. 80 hours maybe not just DNS

You should connect via FTP in 10 minutes after account creation. If you can't contact your web host and ask to fix or help you.

Most-likely some local dns glitch, you can use hosttracker or justping to check that propagation

For future reference, look at the TTL for your domain. It's typically set to 8hrs by default. I recommend doing the following before making any major DNS change regarding existing domains. Set the TTL to 300 (5 minutes) about 2 weeks prior to making the change. This way when you do make a change it should take about 5 minutes or so to propagate.

Not correct. It might take up 72 hours
@OP: contact your current web hosting provider and ask for a help.

    You're both incorrect.

The time it takes is dependent on multiple factors. The first of which is what the TTL in the zone file is set to. Default is typically 86600 seconds, or 24 hours.
If its higher, it will take longer. If its shorter, it will take less time.

Also, not every name server out there follows RFC's. That said, some can out and out ignore the TTL entirely. AOL was typical of this at one time. Not sure if they still are. So if a NS is not reloading at regular intervals (typically every 8 hours) old data can and will remain cached for even longer.

In reality there really is no set time with which it takes for full propagation to occur.

I find it helps to use different DNS servers than provided by many ISP's, as they only update their cache every so often, as stated above by Mia. OpenDNS is the one I use the most, as the servers are very fast, and the updates have never taken more than a few hours when changing settings within a domain name.

If it is taking that long for you, I suggest looking at your TTL in your zone file. It really should not take that long globally. ;)
