For submitters (non spam ) what do you need to see on a web directory to make you want to suggest a site? And is there any good guidelines and tips from any established directory owners. Please divulge your secrets :)

Good quality sites listed where I'll be listed. Preferably the directory is a niche directory that is well edited, has interesting sites, and of course must be indexed by Google.

Before anything else you must make sure that directory is Site Owners Friendly (SOF).
All links must point to your site and not to internal pages

First you need to do is check latest link page and look at editorial integrity.
Quality directory will never allow description whereas words like “flowers” or “gifts” etc. repeated more than once.
You ca also run search for mentioned words to get better picture.

Second check if there are utilities pages like: Details, Rate, Review. Quality directory will give site owners backlink
from these pages as well, which combined with link page will generate total of 4 backlinks to your site.

And the rest you will find in The Best “cream of the crop” Directories!

    ;)

A directory (even though its free) that rejects sites, is still fussy about what it lists.

Great directories, both paid and free, have to possess certain qualities:

    1. Strict moderation.
    2. Limited number of listings per page (usually up to 10).
    3. Good indexing of all pages by search engines.
    4. Easy search and navigation.
    5. The directory must have a high SEO performance (Alexa, PR)
    6. High attendance.

Thanks for the advice fellas. Please keep the good tips coming if you have any. I also think what fast replies said holds allot of merit. Its a great way to check to see if there is spam in a directory.

10 listings per page as MGwebmaster said is enough. Thanks. But what about the amount of outbound links on your homepage. Doesn't it work like this, the more outbound links you have on your homepage the more the pagerank gets diluted.

Are you saying if directory with thousands of links to review takes it time to do good job
then that directory is not a quality directory?

And what PR has to do with anything?
To me if PR0 directory editors doing their job and keeping freaking spammers away by rejecting
garbage submissions says that this directory is going to be around for a long time, long after
every instant inclusion cesspool directories will be gone to land of oblivious.

Regularly a very good indicator of whether a directory is a valuable one and will serve your search engine optimization purposes is whether or not it has an effective and enforced submissions policy which ensures that listings are exactly what they pertain to be.

And a directory with an useful editorial policy is unlikely to offer free directory submissions for the reason that of the man hours involved in ensuring that the SEO submissions made are relevant and authentic.

    Rubbish... Rubbish... Rubbish...
Who told you that or you just made your own uneducated guess?
And how SEO submissions is fit in what you just said and what it has to do with editing?

AMRAY has been paying editors and yet inclusion is FREE.
