    - If Your site is new then better to Start with long tail keywords
    - Try to Find keywords that has highest search and lowest competition.
    - Refer competitor's site to know what keywords they are using.

For the keywords you're targeting, check the sites in the top 3 to see if the ranking is within reach for that keyword.

I begin with a large wish list of KW phrases. I first search for traffic, then I move on to Adwords value, then I reduce it even further by the number of backlinks (set a bar for yourself). If key phrases pass all of these criteria, I then look to overall competitive search volume. So long story short...... valuable traffic.

Take long phrase keywords at starting stage, once they ranked in Google then go for 3 phrase and 2 phrase.. but that keywords should be having high search volume.

The most important step is competetion study. You can refer to your competitors site and find out what they are ranking for. Avoid the head terms if your site is new and small.

You can also go for competetion study with tools like Google Adwords.

I haven't used it. But WordTracker is the most comprehensive keyword selection tool. They contains a powerful "lateral search" feature to locate all your related keywords. WordTracker's database contains more search engine networks than Overture . The application also contains lists of misspelled words based on your keyword entries. There are many more features contained within this application, you can visit
    for more information

The purpose of this tool is to assist webmasters and SEO consultants in performing keyword analysis. This activity, also known as keyword research, is an important step in the search engine optimization process. Specifically, this tool will, when given a URL, display the most frequently used keywords and keyphrases present in the document in question. This tool can help you improve search engine placement by identifying niche keywords and keyphrases that apply to your content. These keywords and phrases can then be used as search terms in a pay-per-click (PPC) search engine advertising campaign.

    Regards.
