The *ONE* Keyword This Site is About Isn't Bringing Up My Website??

I have a website called Liquor.com, and we're all about cocktails. We have countless articles about cocktails and our SEO Meta has this keyword in it. The keyword 'cocktails' is our main keyword we want to be pulled up for in search results. However, when I search "cocktails" in Google Liquor.com is no where to be seen for pages.

What are we doing wrong here? What advice could you gurus give to help answer and solve this weird issue we have here?

Here are some issues I am going to quickly fix in the next week, which should remove some of your replies:

    1. providing adequate ALT tags per each image and use the keyword 'cocktails' in each ALT tag
    2. Remove Liquor.com... from Title tag, and replace with Cocktail since the first 40 chars have most importance.
    3. Link building with other websites
    4. Try to work in the word 'cocktails' with the h1 tags.

Google is all about linking from other sites.
So, you have the domain liquor.com which ranks 2nd for the keyword "Liquor" and you want
to target the keyword "cocktails" why exactly?

    :p

Thanks for the reply. it is because cocktails is probably the highest keyword we want people to find the site from.

Right, from what I see though Liquor is a way more profitable keyword but of course that depends on what you are targeting.
It is a great website by the way. What puzzles me is that it is a PR5 and it also ranks well for several keywords which probably
means that you have already done lots of SEO stuff on it. Is that right?

Well the only thing I've done is make sure the code is correct (using h1, h2, etc properly) and we have our main keywords as our categories and menu items. We also have a ton of content being updated daily. However we're not showing at all in search results for that one keyword :(

well thats not completely true. You are at 180-190 so that means that you just need to keep working. Those things may take some time to work...

As above ones already said. You cannot rely with contents only but link building is also an important part of website ranking, especially in Google. However, I think you have missed this one phase from the beginning - Keyword Research Phase.

You do know your main highest keyword but you should not forget to set a group of keywords. There are many relevant keywords to "cocktails" which is a too generic one. The example is "cocktails recipe". These one is called "second level keyword" and you should pay some attention into it.

    1. Most of them are more targeted keywords compared to generic ones.
    2. Most of them are tend to do seo much easier, use less time either.

Regarding to your idea - I would give my personal opinion on it and you have to make decision yourself

    1. providing adequate ALT tags per each image and use the keyword 'cocktails' in each ALT tag - This won't help much, plus overdoing on it could harm your site ranking and overall trust from Google perspective.

    2. Remove Liquor.com... from Title tag, and replace with Cocktail since the first 40 chars have most importance. - This is not necessary. You can still have your domain name in title, but may consider to move the position to the absolute right side instead.

    3. Link building with other websites - This is an absolute best choice. Read above comments and my recommendation about the link building.

    4. Try to work in the word 'cocktails' with the h1 tags. - Same as #1 ALT tag. It would not help much but any spam attempt could lead your site to be penalized later.

Wow, now you have me worried. How do I know when I am being 'spammy' with my keyword usage in the title and alt tags and when I'm not over doing it?

Seriously do you own that domain or is it just a vague example?
