Along with backlinks, checking your competitors keywords is also a good idea
Try spyfu for that, it is great but paid, then free is not always great
for backlinks, backlinkwatch or some other desktop softwares like linkassistant is also good, they have improved functionalities like emailing the webmasters of those websites where your competitor has a backlink and even the ability to manage the links resource pages etc.

LOL... EXACTLY!!! But I always say, time is gold, and the more I waste spying on my competitors the less time I have to concentrate on making my site better and my services the BEST. Oh, and of course, the less money I can make. I always say I AM my OWN biggest competitor and worse enemy. IF I can push myself and my business beyond limits then no one can stop me!!!

Everyone should check their site's competitors and see what links they have that you don't. Then get yourself listed on those!

I agree with back link watch.com they're one of the best ways to see if you have lots of Google links MSN back links and also from other important search engines - to be perfectly honest with you don't worry about how many back links you have pointing to your website - the fundamentals of successful website domination is to promote your articles that help feed the Internet really simple syndication known as the popular RSS and social bookmarking like Facebook.com twitter.com and the other top 50 social bookmarking websites......................................
