Is SEO dead in the long run?

I'm throwing this out there as a conceptual question of sorts:

Is SEO dead in the long run?

I mean, as technology gets more and more advanced, will Google and other search engines start discounting activities that are done just for the sake of search rankings?

I think things like quality incoming links will always count, but I'd imagine that as technology advances Google will eventually want to judge content and sites a standalone basis, with a smaller emphasis on all the little extra things that people do to get ranked. (commenting on dofollow blogs, article marketing, etc.)

SEO is an evolution of sorts. As with any advertising, or with any section of an industry, changes can and will happen. Those who are able to adapt will benefit, while the rest fall behind.

Technology will change things no doubt, but I dont think SEO will be dead.
yeh they could place more emphasis on the site itself, especially if they come out with something that can detect quality content.
But I dont see a lot changing at least in the next 5 - 10 years...

I doubt it. But it is an evolving beast, so we'll see what happens. It is definitely a different animal from what it used to be. Keep your eyes and ears pealed and just keep pace with the changes.

Yes or No. As search engines get more advanced, like what you said. People will change the way to do the SEO. In short, SEO won't be dead but it will continue to evolve just like search engines.

Google has been discounting those activities, for years.

The search game is evolving and so are search engines. SEOs who must evolve and now starting to realize that they need to be content advisors more than anything else. Rather than putting in hidden keywords and purchasing links all over they're now showing people how to add more value to their site, so visitors will get excited and link to it on their own.

This is how my strategy has evolved for sure.

SEO copywriting was never ever about keyword density. It was never just about, as Brian Clark calls it Inserting targeted key words in certain places (like titles), and in frequencies and densities designed to satisfy a particular search engine algorithm.

Not quality SEO copywriting, no. But those tactics did work for a time in the early 2000s. One of my first true SEO jobs was in 2000, and thats exactly what I was asked to do, I changed the titles, put in meta tags with a set of keywords, and changed all the copy to mention certain keywords over and over.

And as much as I hated to do it, I also put in several keywords on the bottom of each page in a long list. Most of the stuff was pretty tacky, but the company had hired someone who told them all about SEO and what to do, and I was just the web developer. And sure enough, it worked very well and they got substantial amounts of traffic, an overall boost of almost 5k uniques per day. It truly got me interested in SEO.

If I were to do that same job today (I would refuse) it would likely get a site banned, or it simply wouldn't be effective at all. But 10 years ago it was the thing to do.

    Hi,

Back in the day we could just spam websites to hell and back with keywords and get rankings easily. No one even knew what backlinks and anchor text were back then!

So I disagree, SEO is not dead in the long run, but it is evolving! This isn't really anything new

    Thanks

If you look at how many web sites out that have no or little seo, you will know that SEO is at its infancy. It is nowhere near to its peak. So many companies still rely on the old marketing venues like the Yellow Pages. In the long run, those traditional advertising venues are dead. SEO is here to stay for a long time.

SEO will evolve, not die. The evolution of SEO has been in effect since the beginning of the internet. I believe as the search engines become smarter, spammy sites will be less and less prevalent.

Eventually all sites should conform to seo practices. I have seen countless sites that have hard-to-find information and great articles but it took me hours to find the site. Mainly because there was no page title, meta data, or h tags. I believe the hardest thing for search engines is to filter out pages that "disguise" there site with phoney data, while great sites have no data to interpret.

As long as people use search engines there will always be seo. Unless there is a way of removing the necessity of search engines I don't see how it would be possible to say seo is dead.
