I was asked this question today and struggled...at the beginning with the response. Truth be told...it started by reading a blog post suggesting that starting a directory would be a great way to come up with ideas for website topics/themes by generating ideas based on the sites submitted. I posted a comment asking what script would be best. The owner responded with phpld and here I am. Since I have spent many, many hours on design, business process, and editting [submissions]. All time well spent because I have made some $$$. Not enough to pay the rent but more than enough to cover my expenses (not including my time). The biggest benefit is that it has created the need to increase my knowledge of all (or most) things SEO, which were previously unfamilar to me. Oh yeah, if this question has already been asked...my apologies...I looked and couldn't find any thing close. That said, I almost sure the question has been asked before but I'm also sure there have been a few directories opened since
frankly, since everybody else had one, so i too had to get one for myself. Learned a lot about SEO and site management and i am glad that i did it.
I recently find out that almost Good PR directory start to collecting money for their post links.Do you know any free good PR directory?
ROFL... if the damn rep system would allow me to give green i would have. hilarious response :bigthumb: x2
I wanted a simple way to exchange links with other sites. At the time, I had no idea exchanging links would become such a big deal.
I started a directory way back to use one of my domain and just to get a kick to own and maintain a directory.. Never realized that directory will grow fast and will be a headache to maintain it. So I sold it of last year and now its one of the best directory on internet..
Something to do rather than chatn on msn messenger 24/7 lmao (I'll probably regret this later?) lol Possible exposure for other sites I plan on building And lastly, some play money
1. wanted to explore this whole directory stuff 2. I see it as another source of revenue (small as it may be, more eggs in the basket) 3. had too much free bandwith on the shared hosting account where the main site is hosted and it adds to its value (may get more cash for it if I ever plan to sell it) 4. study what are the trends, what topics are hot and what are not, see various site designs for sites in niches I explore, what works for them and what not and so on No special order and just a few that I think of now.
i was looking for a challenge, i had other websites but they were all #1 and first page for wanted keywords and were doing good by word of mouth i bought webspassage with a free phpld and a free template becuase it was cheap. and upgraded to paid 3.0 versions and better template i was looking for a cheap website under $100 to test my seo and marketing skills.. and webspassage did that! i have learnt alot havnt really made any profits yet it all goes back into marketing i used to have a niche directory back in about 2003 and early 2004 it was mp3directory.net a free directory for mp3 related websites it had a very nice custom design.. but i let the domain expire and my hosting account also after my pc blewup(literally) losing about 4 years worth of information/scripts and software. i started that for basicly the same reasons as above i just like starting new websites and building them up.. watching them grow.. try some new ideas.. and learning from it
I've started several ones because I wanted to provide people with space to put their sites. It's a great way of having backlinks too.
PP told me that i'd get lots of naked girls wanted to exchange links with me if i had directories, i said yeah ok let's build some directories
that was one of Aaron's Website Ideas[/URL]. I tried it too and most of what I got back were alot of adsense sites and less time to focus on better things.
I was looking for source to make my daily lunch money and I found it. Directories are also a great way to help your own sites gain SE presence.
We focused on money, a lot of folks may laugh at that, but we have a simliar site for accommodation that has been online since 2000 and it makes real money. So that was the reason why we started a directory, managed, edited & marketed correctly a top directory will given time make money
