Well, for me having site in top 10 in G. for most popular keywords means more prestige than being buried in directory that won't send visitors my way. So, for me prestige being listed in DMOZ means very little compare to thousands who are visiting G. and see site I manage on page #1. What would you rather to have? fastreplies
Not me. I will take hundreds of visits over one lousy backlink anytime. You wanna proof? AMRAY Directory is not in DMOZ, AMRAY Web Hosting is Directory - Alexa 18,000 Hosting - Alexa 360,000 fastreplies
OP is asking: Is DMOZ even worth it? My example says NO. Site can do very well without being listed in DMOZ or Yahoo or BOTW fastreplies
Absolutely worth it. I personally believe that Google uses DMOZ as part of their "anti spam" filter - if it's good enough for DMOZ, it probably isn't considered spam.
That's your belief. It is unsupported. I haven't submitted any of my sites since 2007. I have several top ranking websites with 2K visitors/day. They're not in DMOZ, never will be. I don't need DMOZ. No one does. Including Google.
Google does give weight to sites that are listed in DMOZ. Being listed in DMOZ is a sure tie breaker with your competitors in your niche market.
I hate to disappoint you but Google for: best free directory and then check on page #1 for site in my signature which BTW is NOT listed in DMOZ fastreplies
The Open Directory Project (ODP) has become a vital part of your web site promotion strategy. Many search engines now use DMOZ (the open directory) to generate at least some of their listing information. If you want to stay visible you need to get listed in DMOZ or at least try to. Many spider-based search services have switched to using the Open Directory as their main listings for search results... Lycos, Netscape Search, and AOL Search all use Open Directory as their main results. Others are likely to switch, hence Google sees the importance of sites being listed in DMOZ as most likely relevent to their content, since humans compile directories, not spiders. In Yahoo!'s case, these humans are employees. In the case of the Open Directory (DMOZ), it's over 17,500 volunteers! Go to http://www.lycos.com and search for "penny stocks" or even "dog training". You won't see the Lycos crawler results any more. You get the Open Directory results. Same for Netscape and AOL. Open Directory (DMOZ) now fits into the 80-20 Rule of Web Marketing - i.e., it's part of the 20% effort that brings 80% of the benefit. So it's worth the time and effort to list with it if you want to be one step ahead of your competition. Reference: millservices.co.uk/dmoz.html Emanuel
I would guess your name is not Ken Evoy who wrote this piece it his blog millservices.co.uk/dmoz.html fastreplies
Agent000 wanted to know where I got most of my reference to support my belief that Google gives weight to sites that are listed in Dmoz. Ken Envoy is one of those trusted source as well as others that can backup my claim. Emanuel
Hi, DMOZ is a open source project with billions of pages in his database. It is the one of the largest open directory project on the net. if u are thinking of submitting your content to DMOZ( It should of high quality). Best regards
Does anyone who is not a blogger know what DMOZ is? Nope. Does the general public know what Google is? Yep. So basically it depends on your target audience in my opinion, but still these days most people who are doing anything online are so Google focused that it surprises me that DMOZ and similar sites even exist anymore.
