Yeah, you keyword should relevant to your site. You need to know first the niche of your site before you are going to start picking targeted keywords.

use google keyword tool to find out more about competition, monthly searches, suggestions for more related keywords etc IBP can help you a lot to choose good keywords and compare your website with those of your competitors.
@ redcliff maybe as i know KEI (Keywords Effectiveness Index) is all about how to calculate your keyword based on volume etc and it come KEI, i don't know how to explain better, but just googling and find fabian lim talked about keywords....

One thing to be aware of with Google's Keyword tool is that it's based off the paid keywords that people purchase for their AdWords, so technically it's not totally accurate. That said though (lol), I do use it for my own keyword research, but just wanted to put out that caveat.

Pratice is the best teacher. From the site visit log you can find which words people uses to find your site. If the keywords was not in 1 page, you can choose your keywords from them.

Keywords research on competition of website and used the website keywords.....how much old first see that thing then you might select web pages keywords.
Really depends what your going after. A lot of ebooks say to go for long tail keywords, but they don't bring in all that much traffic. If it's for articles that's fine, but websites id target harder to get keywords.
Type your keyword in google search, then if you click on 'Show options' just below the google search bar, scroll down and you will see 'wonder wheel' on the left. Click on that and it will give you variations of your root keyword.
