I did some changing in my H1 tag last week and my site in Google went to place 12th position yesterday from 11th position and today it dropped to 13th position for a particular keyword. I was so worried, I was doing a lots of comparison with competitor site. I did a lot of changing in meta description, title ( but not H1 Tag) and still no improvement. Today Morning, When I Check my keyword density with a toll on seocentro.com for my keyword , it show there was no keyword in H1 Tag and then suddenly I realized my mistake and update my keyword in H1 tag. The result is within 12 hour my site is now again at 11th position and hope very soon it will be on 1st Page. Thats the value of H1 tag.
Use <h1> tags for page headings, and <h2> for section headings. It certainly assists Google in understanding the essence of the page. Try and think of things naturally here: When you open up a newspaper, what catches your eye? The headings of each article. Treat your H1 tag the same. You want both the search engine and the user to see exactly what each page is about (especially a page you want to rank well). Use H2 tags as secondary headings as well, but do not have more than one H1 tag.
I would guess they didnt crawl your new page yet. h1 tag is not the only thing that helps, there are many other major factors. specially backlinks is most important.
good one bro. Now try to do the same on all the remaining pages of your site and you will surely see some good results. Then start promoting your site by getting more related backlinks and surely you'll land on first page.
<h1>.....<h6> is not a header tag. It is heading size, h1 being biggest, h6 smallest. It shows emphasis on text and sections, and the importance of each. Similar to bold. Dropping from 11th to 13th is a natural fluctuation. You are putting too much emphasis on thinking that one thing done one minute is going to have an effect. Stephen C

You needn't to worry about that, just gain more backlinks,that's small change may don't hurt your ranking. just the Google upadte.
only h1 tag is not sufficient for raising to keyword ranking, you should always update good contents and create relevant back link for targeting keyword.
well, I agree tags are not everything. But in SEO even the smallest thing matters. H1 - H6 tags are important. but again it depends how you use them..

All header tags are important whether H1, H2 , . . . . . H6. The point is to use where, what and How is important. So do as it is defined and described in Google Basic Seo Guide Here
All these point when put together, they will have a significant effect ... Alt attribute is also a important factory which many people ignore it.
Many of the above points are mentioned in Google seo starter guide and google suggest to pay attention on these points, it means google does pay attention on these points.
Good thread. I want to add something yes H1 tag is very important, but that's not all. You have plenty other things to look for. Content-Content is the king they said. Put special attention to it, because google does. Always write unique content and put them on your site. Thanx Paul
