The answer to both of your questions is that I wrote my own code for these bits of functionality. In either case I set a cookie that retains the setting for returning visitors.

It is an awesome copy but maybe you should tell how you learned all that. Also you can improve upon the 9 tickers (What it's all about) to make them more interesting.
