Can anyone tell me the benefits of using wpmu over wp single user? Does anyone have good examples of wpmu sites? Why would someone want to host someone elses blog...just to be able to put ads or adsense up?
How would wpmu be better than a site that just allows contributing authors if that's all you want???

its all depend on your requirement , as for wpmu you can use it if you have lot of domain to develop and dont have time to uplaod wp setup to each of them .. instead you can use one setup for master domain to layout other domain using same setup and creating wp sites each having diffnt cms for each site using same wpmu
and if you have few domain then i guess you can use each domain with wp without using wpmu as later you can custom out each domain wiht wp

WPMU is good if you wish to manage multiple websites in a single place as we all know. Why would someone prefer to set up WPMU instead of just allowing contributors to post articles on his blog? Imagine yourself in a writer's position. Would you prefer posting on someone else's website or rather have your own blog, even it's based on a subdomain of wordpress.com, blogger.com etc.? I guess you'd rather own than be owned. And there are quite a few advantages of running a WPMU based blog hosting business.

Apart from the setup there's also a single place to maintain and upgrade, and that's rather important when you have a large number of websites in your portfolio.
