    Hey DP,

I've noticed that a lot of seo articles, reviews, software, etc... mention dmoz or have dmoz ranking. Every body seems to be having a hard time submitting sites to DMOZ and I'm wondering if it's even worth it?

I'm curious if the time and effor with Dmoz is worth it. Will it bring you more traffic?

    Cheers
    happy sat night :)

If you are submitting to other directories, then yes, it's just as worth it as any of the others. Submit & Forget, just like the rest... but if you are not submitting to other directories, then FORGET 2 SUBMIT!

Traffic? Depends on the category and who ya ask. I don't get much at all...and by not much, I mean 1 or 2 visits a YEAR!

For the few minutes needed to suggest a site, then its worth it.

Whats NOT worth it, is checking everyday, resubmitting or sweating over it.

Sure it is. It is free and only takes a few minutes of your time. Now your site may never be listed but there's no real downside to submitting.

Many years ago Google updated every few months.

Now, it updates... hourly. You can do the same search 10 times a day and each time the SERPs will be different, reflecting forum threads recently updated, news pages, etc.

Google doesn't give a rat's tutu about a directory that is out of breath trying to catch up with 2003. Using the DMOZ database in any way would bias the SERPs into looking like we're in 2002 all over again.

When was the last time a DMOZ cat showed up significantly in the SERPs? That's a clue.

The only thing I really plan to get out of getting my site included (eventually) is PR. The category I submitted to is PR 5 on DMOZ, Google Directory, and some other ones so I figure it's worth the minute or two to submit.

You will get no extra PR. First of all, the value of links is not what it used to be. DMOZ is populated with PR 5 pages with plenty of PR 0 websites listed. And cobwebs,

I have not posted in this forum in ages, you cannot imagine my surprise to find out that some people still fantasize that DMOZ links are worth anything. Get with the program... it is 2010 already. Google is way smarter than that.

That is where the motto FORGET 2 SUBMIT comes from.

Dmoz is reall and trully worth it. First of mall It is free and only takes a few minutes of your time, and then it may take a little bit of your time, but ultimately you will definitely be punished with traffic.

It's only worth it if you've got a good niche. However, there is absolutely NO downside to submitting and who knows maybe you'll get lucky!

In my experience you're more likely to get listed if you narrow down to the exact geographical location you business operates from - this is possibly seen as more relevant and will probably have less submissions in the que for the editors to get through.

I think you are trying to say that people should try and offer their site in the Regional section of the directory. That can be done if the site has some sort of base in a particular place. That should be noted on the site and yes it can often be that sites submitted to regional, providing that base exists, can get reviewed and possible listed quicker than in the topical section of the directory. But don't forget it can ALSO be listed, assuming we want to list it, in the topical section and under these conditions a site can be suggested twice, once in Regional and once in Topical.

Gaining the backlinks required for SEO makes DMOZ worth it, in my view, but not more so than the multitude of other options. Don't stress out over submitting to DMOZ

It worth it to submit for a new website. It will promote your site for free.

But I think it's no use anymore? Will you check the directory frequently?

I think it worth it. Google is using DMOZ as their mirror, so the search engine will rank your site better.

As helleborine says, if you after backlink, then it will have value as any link from any site with PR.

If you want to empress your girl, who's probably care less about DMOZ, then sure, give a try.

    Prestige, nothing but prestige

Nice prestige if one can get ones site listed in DMOZ isn't it? Pity about those who never make it, they must feel pretty bad about not having that enormous status symbol. Worth checking sites out to see if they have that prestige IMO.

It's worth it to submit to the directories because it helps the overall SERPs. DMOZ will probably not accept too many sites. I submitted an electronic site in 2003 and it still hasn't shown up. I give. Submit once and move on.
