Where you really banned due to an increase in your visitors?
That does not make sense. If you mean your clicks increased, then Google is making more money too so there must have been some other fishy activity Google suspected most likely...

Again...nonsense. Only 3 days after I joined Adsense I went from 3,000 average to a day with 45,000 visitors, no Google ever complained. The reason why you got banned was because you didn't obey the rules or the article or whatever what it was that delivered you ten times more traffic was reason for people to have some "fun" with your adsense. You're just one of those many people who come here will all those horror stories and who refuse to tell the whole truth.

I agree with John2006 here, my blog had some heavy spikes the last year and google never complained. I made it to digg frontpage the first day it was online with 10000 users the first day and I never recieved a complaint from google.

If the source is legit you have nothing to worry about, don't you think google knows that sites like digg and slashdot exist that can send massive amounts of traffic to a site, even without the site owner expecting it ? (because it was not him who submitted the site)

So, if it's legit traffic you have nothing to worry about.

Ok - there may be a lot of debate about whether you have to or not - I say, play it on the safe side. It doesn't hurt to mail them anyways, even in the 5% chance your account may be terminated...

not a dp thread, but a blog entry from a fellow DP'er who knows WAY more about adsense than i ever will. Scary as hell.

IMHO i have to fall on the side of "play it safe" and contact google. So what if you can justify it and get your account reinstated if they find you weren't fraudulent? do you really want the interrim downtime and headache when a simple courtesy email would suffice? all google wants is to be kept in the loop.

The difference is that the traffic source of the guy who got banned (and reinstated) is the missing referrers. This must have looked like he was buying cheap traffic from traffic sellers.

Sure, if you want to feel safer contact google with your information and hope they recieve it in time before they ban your account. I personally don't think it is necessary if your traffic comes from obvious legit sources.

i do not want to disclose my site name, theme, etc., but it has a very suitable theme to be submitted to those sites. so yes, i was expecting this, but as i have never experienced digg effect, i must say i am very impressed.

thank you for all your replies. i think i am on the safe side, but to be on the safer side, i mailed google anyway.

Today i got a reply. They say that they're aware of the spike, and they know the reason, they know the digg effect. but they also mentioned that i shouldn't worry, they will get rid of invalid clicks as usual.

what invalid click?? I never had such an issue, and i never mentioned something like that in my mail. i don't understand...

I often have big spikes (100,000+) usually on Mondays when people return to work. Google isn't concerned about traffic spikes as long as you are not clicking on your ads.
