No problem. I got around 20K backlinks a week after I registered a domain. The domain I registered was previously a site. Anyway back to biz, yes its possible to get 12K in a month even. If you have a network of blog with a lot of indexed pages. If you put the link sidewide in your blog then you can get many backlinks but from the same site.

That's a nice way to get penalized by Google because it is pretty much impossible to build so many backlinks in a natural looking way.

It is possible, especially with all of the software out there at the moment. Like you said, he's got most of them from his own blogs. I strongly recommend diversifying your inbound links, you need to have a good, wide spread.
I don't think it's a good idea to try to technique. One of your competitors could notice this and report you to Google and get you banned. All this effort for nothing.
