How important is it to have the keyword in the domain?

I've set up an auto-blog with a 3 word keyword in mind. With that keyword, I get about 10 UVs a day, but no money from Adsense yet.

I've been researching other keywords for another autoblog and came up with a keyword (that, fortunately, is related to my first auto-blog). I'm wondering how important it is to have the keyword in the domain name. If it is not that important, I could promote the first site using the new keyword I just found, correct?

Another newbie question: Aside from the domain name, where are other spots in the site where I can place my keyword to help it get indexed by google (it's a wordpress blog)

Also, I won't share the keyword, but when I put it into google, I get:
    548,000 results

Google trends didn't give me any graphs because search volumn wasn't high enough, but Market Samurai said:
62 searches (I'm guessing this is per day?)
    225,000 Competition

Is that good? It's the best I've been able to find (in terms of low competitoin and high search volume).

Keywords in the domain don't particularly help ranking so just use the first domain.

The title tags are the most important place to get your keywords. I suggest you read my 7 Days of SEO posts on my blog.

Opposite to above post, I believe that having keywords in your domain name helps ranking high.
Having keywords in domain + some back links and onpage optimization can easily put you on front page.

This may seem obvious but... I suggest that you always check your ranking for any keywords you may have in your domain name, along with any other keywords for which you check. You will get some idea about the effectiveness of the keywords in your domain name by doing so.

Having the keyword in the domain plays an important part in ranking, maybe not that high but it is still significant.

If you build two sites with the same content and same everything, except that one has the keyword on its domain, that domain will rank higher than the other one.

It is obvious that if you have the keyword on your domain, that means that your site is associated with that keyword. Domain name are permanent once created.

    Sorry guys, it simply isn't.

The only benefit you may get from it is because people LINK to you with the site name

    eg. http://mysite.com

So the link would be - check out mysite.com and therefore you'll be ranked for mysite.com ... but that isn't a product of the URL ... it's a product of the links pointing towards it.

Keyword domain names help if competition is low, but once you get into competitive markets, linking becomes more significant and a keyword domain can easily be outranked.

Agreed, if the competition is low you can rank well by simply having the keyword in the domain.
It's getting harder and harder to that though. A good linkbuilding plan takes priority IMO

Google gives preference to sites with keywords in the domain name. I know this from experience. I have to work 10 times harder to gain a ranking for a site when the keywords are not included in the domain.

On-page SEO isn't going to get you to the top of the ranks...but off-page SEO will! As far as including the keyword in the title, put one, no more than two, keywords in the title. On-page factors are one-time changes to the text and content of your site that help as a bonus to your website’s rankings. Remember: on-page factors alone will not get you ranked high in the search engines.

Please forgive me for asking what will seem like an obvious question but I want to be crystal clear.
If my keyword is apple but my domain name is appletree.com, would this domain name be good to help rank on page 1 for apple?

    Thanks

From my experience it help a lot to have the keyword in the domain.

But if the keyword you are targetting is "cheap cars", I dont think "superduperultracheapcars.com" will help you that much, if not at all.
If you do get "cheapcars.com", then it will help.

Having the keyword in your domain will improve upon your rankings tremendously. Also make sure that the same keyword phrase is the title of your website.
