Finally got page rank and several questions

My site went up in mid December 2009 and I finally got a page rank of 1 today. While I am happy about this I want to make it better. I have been posting to directories daily, added my url in the signature of every forum I post in, have a facebook and twitter page for the site and doing anything else I can think of to increase my SERP.

I have submitted to hundreds and hundreds of directories and it seems that few ever get around to ever actually posting your link, likely due to the amount of webmasters submitting links. Does anyone have a list of directories that will actually add your site?

I have used several online tools to check my number of backlinks. They give varying numbers from 150 to 199, yet when I check google webmaster tools they list just 32 backlinks. Why is this? Some site also list “google backlinks” and these usually show as 0. Just what is a google backlink?

Thanks to anyone who has an answer.

It is normal. Google webmaster tool do not show all your backlinks. Use Yahoo Site Explorer.

If you want to see the links that Google does counted - You have to look them via Google Webmaster Tools and avoid using Yahoo Siteexplorer doing it. Google and Yahoo have a completely different on each other for the way the treat with links. You are currently optimizing site for Google and not Yahoo, why should bother to see the links in Yahoo? I idid not say Yahoo Siteexplorer is crap. It could help you illustrate overall link pattern but it cannot be an indicator in Google anyway.

Newer directories usually have a better acceptance rate so that's an idea ;) You should not worry so much about PR. Your SERP is much more important.
That being said you should edit your signature and use a proper anchor text instead of just having the URL posted like that :)

I agree and hope that an improved PR will help my SERP as I still do not show up at all in results for the two best keywords Aneurysm and Aneurysms. Any suggestions for changing that?

Yes, but as they make money by attracting visitors searching for sites or webmasters posting links it is in their best interest to post as many links as possible.

I could not agree more... People worry too much about PR, when in reality they should be concentrating on their SERP and in increasing traffic to their site. A high PR does not guarantee traffic which you can then convert into sales. So focus your energy on increasing your SERPs and bringing more people to your site, PR should be a secondary concern.

And PR is not going to help in anyway in your serp efforts!

For serps, you need good visibility by networking with high trafficked and relevant niche sites... which are not necessarily high PR! :)

I'm making efforts in that direction. Relevant sites for my particular niche are difficult. Most are authority type sites, hospitals, government, etc and they really have no interest in adding links. There are a few that can and will and I am making efforts to get my link posted, even if it means exchanging links.

You can also try networking with 'staying fit' and health sites in general and you would find loads of them on the internet! :)

if you use site explorer you'll see all your site's back links. Its normal to google not to show all your site's back links they only show quality back links.
