1. Lets say this site was great, people would love it. How many people would I have to advertise it to initially to let it spread at a decent rate on its own? 2. If I have 8 websites with a page rank between 4-6. If I just put a backlink to a new website I was starting up on just those 8 websites. Would that be better than doing 1000's of links on blog comments and forums? thnks
If your aim is to get only PR... then surely you may proceed with links on only those 8 sites... but if you are looking for good traffic, you would be required to make your site visible at highly trafficked sites with backlinks! However good your site might be... one would always need to spread the word around... for quicker progress! Regards, RightMan
Yes you will need to package it and market it well. Just good content, unfortunately may not be good enough
I would suggest you to look out for a proper SEO plan and some useful tips on implementing a link building strategy.
You're always gonna have to give it a little push at the start, but if it is good, then it should work alone!
Take off in terms of traffic? If that, I guess, no, it can't. You still need to do some seo for that.
IMO, you have a better chance of hitting the lottery unless you work hard promoting it everywhere, everyday for a year or longer. Then you have just a small chance of reaching critical mass, the point at which it becomase viral.
I would recommend you to re-think about this again. The links from older sites could boost a new site Status / PR / Link Popularity. However, it does not look natural at all. Does it make sense to the old sites put the link to a newer site almost instantly. There is not reasonable. Even a site like Digg.com may not get this kind of links when they were a first day started. The more identical pattern = The more time to SEO the site later.
fantastic sites can definitely just take off on their own, a friend had an idea and threw one up last August, told a few mates in the business and that was it, word went round and it went PR6 on first pr update, massive traffic, all kinds of top blogs (Boing Boing) and even the NY Times have loved and linked to it. bet he cant do it again in a hurry tho, it was a spark of genius and first to the post with it.
It would be unusual for it to take off on its own unless it is one of a kind. Regardless it still is a good idea to have a link building campaign that focuses on social bookmarking, forums, blogs and articles.
8 backlinks from PR 4-6 sites won`t do too much good if the sites aren`t from the same niche/topic as the new site. If people really love your site...it could take off on its own, because people will share it with their friends...but it really depends on the site and concept... If it's a browser game/social media it will be promoted faster, if it's only a blog with info you could wait for months and get no traffic... My suggestion is you need to promote your site anyway...
