SEOBusiness, Wouldn't step 3 & 4 make your directory site a un-unique? How would he begin promoting his new directory?
To be honest, having a directory at all will make sure that your not unique, all the changes in the world can be made, but its still a directory.
Popes, what's the purpose of a new directory? Wouldn't search engines know that new directories aren't unique too? You don't think that someone who designs a directory from the ground up can't come up with some unique attributes? I think if someone wanted to focus on one area (like Home & Garden) they would fair better with search engines and alike.
The names pipes actually if you design from the ground up, yes it can be unique in whatever way, but its still a directory, once you take it to a different point its no longer a directory, it becomes something else. I think maybe directories struggle to become unique enough without becoming something completely non directory like.

I hear you guys say something about niche. I will like to start a business directory for local business with a view of giving them a web presence and in doing so give them an opportunity to leverage the internet for the business profitability. But my problem is that I prefer starting with a free customizable script which I can upgradable later. This is to take my time to build the directory and when the directory starts earning money for itself I will upgrade etc. Any useful tip as per where to get a good free script to start off with will be appreciated...
Mhh, then I would choose WordPress with a theme like jobpress, classified or whatever. There is a good plugin, I forgot the name, if you want to know it I could search for it.

Definitely a niche directory. You would get a higher click through rate, since the ads would be more targeted to your traffic.

I think you are right but still i have one query, that is, if i want to earn money through Google ads than i need more traffic but i think in niche directory the traffic will be limited. So how can i earn money? And is it possible to earn at list 2 or 3$ per day in niche directory?
There are a couple solutions: 1st - You can buy a ready made script, best I've seen is phpld. 2nd - Wordpress has cool directory software, its like 99 dollars and theres no licences. 3rd - Make a web directory from scratch but you'll def need some programming skills or know someone that does.
