    Getting backlinks is essential if you want to increase your site rankings. You can do this yourself by adding your site to various directories. Also, good quality content should encourage link-baiting.

    PageRank is not that important these days but yes, some webmasters do prefer it today.

    To improve your PR:

    1. Write quality content with your keywords in it (keep everything natural)
    2. Submit your website to quality, high PR and relevant sites/blogs/directories
    3. Update your content frequently so that Google can crawl your site quicker.

    Remember, PR is also based on internal linking structure; like how you have managed your site by linking internal pages of your site.
