Obviously do a 301 redirect to minimise backlink loss of link juice. In a recent thread at webproworld, however, they quoted Matt Cutts as saying that even with a 301 redirect, some link juice will get lost and that therefore you should aim to change all of your backlinks - not easy for new sites and pretty well impossible for old sites with lots of links.

Don't worry a proper 301 redirection will help you to retain most of your site ranks.

Of course you will get the negative effects for your website, you are changing URL of your website that's mean now you are not available on your old address (URL), you will loose your complete SEO values for your old URL.

I suggest you to not change your URL but if its necessary then use 301 redirection, at least through this you can get traffic from your old URL.

    Hope this helps you :)

see your promotion for domain.com and you are changing it to domain.com.au so just use commonsense how can you redirect your back links to .com.au 301 redirection is to redirect the traffic not for back link...

    I agree with you.

by the way, why would you want your .com for .com.au ??? isn't the .com better over any domain?

I live in Australia, and I thought it might be easier to have my business site to come under .com.au, and hopefully to rank higher in Australia. However, if .com is better over any domain, then I guess it won't hurt to keep it.

I just trying to find the best option for Aussie individuals or businesses to find my website.

    What do you guys think?

That mean my site URL will still use .com, but why would you pay for the extra domain name per year? Unless, your trying to tell me something here??

I thought you owned both domains.

Also, branding your name takes not only 2 domains, but a lot of them.

If you have the main domain ".com" and you are lucky to have your country domain too, why not? (it is all based on your needs as well)

    Ignore this, it's complete rubbish.

If you want a slight boost in the google.com.au engine then sign up for a Google webmaster account and set the targeting to Australia.

Country specific tlds (eg. .com.au or .co.uk) get a slight rankings boost in their specific Google engines (Australia and UK respectively) ... however you can set this in Google's webmaster tools for .com's

I would keep the .com for sure. You would lose links and rankings if switching to a new domain. You can use redirect, but that will still not help your links and SEO, just traffic.

I would advice you to keep .com and just create a new site with .com.au if you want to boost ranking toward certain country. Keep them separated.

    1. 301 redirect is not a magic bullet. It is a safest way to redirect or transfer all pages from old domain to a new one without any penalty anyway. But your new site still has to take around 4-9 weeks period before things settled. However, since you redirect from .com to .com.au then your ranking that .com site ever retrieved will be all lost! It is almost like using a new domain and 301 from .com may not benefits your .com.au site as you may expected.

    2. You do not have to use .com.au to gain better in Google.com.au. I did not say .com.au domain will not give you advantage towards Google.com.au, sure it would. But you can still concentrate in link building to make your .com site outrank .com.au sites, even for a competitive keywords specified for Australia.

    Anyway, it's up to you.

Hmm its just rubbish?? do you have a any idea what are you saying?? Whatever I said is not rubbish because i am not only person who is suggesting to keep ".com " domain as "jordanb27", "Sxperm" said he will definitely loose his rankings and backlinks for his old .com website.

I do agree with you that if he chooses “.com.au" then he will get boost in google.com.au but he will definitely loose his “.com” website value (Rankings, Backlinks) in Google.com

So whatever i said is not completely wrong, think twice before commenting.

With .com.au domain, you don't need to select your preferred country as Australia in Google Webmaster because Google can do that from your domain name. You need to do this for common TLDs like .com, .org, .net, etc.

Personally, I would say, you are wasting your time with changing the domain here for converting from .com to .com.au blog.

Even though, fully 301 permanent redirect each page to your new domain, will still resulting in some page rank loss which will not be helpful in SERP ranking too.

You might choose building more quality backlinks and set your .com domain preferred Australia to get better results.

Anyway, don't waste more time by doing reverse from .com.au back to .com but try to concentrate more in getting local backlinks that the domain have .com.au TLD and related to your niche.

Make sure you have completed 301 redirect to all pages as it is expected next page rank update by end of this month or next month.

    Good luck!
