From what I am gathering from various posts, backlinks and trackbacks are essential to not only positioning yourself on a google page by keyword but also increase your connectivity to other relevant businesses around the net. What I am still not understanding is the backlink trackback and do follow links... Can someone help out. Thanks.

I don't know much about the trackback aside from it's just for updates on posts and comments on blogs. It is the links or backlinks is one of the factors that helps sites gain reputation and scores that results to gaining positions on SERP, many says do follow links (links that don't have rel="nofollow") attribute that are counted as backlinks and passes juice, but links with nofollow tag should not be ignored, many had justified they help, too!
