I have found that it's really hard to hang your hat on one website. Of about fifty sites 20% of them are performers. I have learned the hard way to do substantial research before the purchase of a new domain. If you do that research then 10 sites can do quite well with about 20% cent again being the clear cut winners. A number of my better sites are actually .infos ($1.00 at Go daddy).
This is good info and I have found the same. 20% are clear winners 60% pay their way and 20% just never really cut it.
My suggestion is to go to WarriorForum and sign up for the "War Room". It costs $40 USD but you will gain tremendous knowledge on what's going on in IM from people who are already successful. Much much better than buying courses and books here and there.
Adsense micro sites? Make websites around certain keywords and rank them on google. Do a little bit of keyword research and you make a website in 2-3 days time and start earning in a week. If they make around $3 per day then you could probably flip them for $700!
