Book using material from my website with permission.

I live in the UK and run a website, and recently found out that a book of quotations has been published in the USA which includes quotes from articles on my website (the quotation book lists my website as the source of the quotes).

The author of the book did not ask for permission. Is this legal? Should he pay me for the material?

It depends what exactly what quoted, the context in which they use it, who owns the original material that was quoted. Is it your original works they are quoting?

I own the original material which the quote came from. The book is a book of quotations.

I'm not lawyer, and laws differ between countries but most countries have some facility for short quotes to be made. The publishers should have had someone getting permissions to publish the quotes though.

In any case, unless the quote is substantial or is doing you real damage, you probably would find that the cost of getting a lawyer to pursue it for you would be excessive so you may just have to grin and bear it.
