As a directory submitter, I see phpld being the most used directory script. Esyndicat might be considered a distant second (IndexU comes close).

I agree with Jitendraag about phpLD being the most use and esyndicat don't come anywhere second, I don't have stats but I know this by seeing all of the directories submitted in the announcement forums and on my directory sites for years, the poll which states that esyndicat was the leading script is questionable and should be dismiss. Just take a look at the directory list and count them up and make stats out of it and you'll know that phpLD is the top choice for webmasters.

I think http://www.freeglobes.net/ is catching up here.

Yup, PHPld is the most used script but there are good reasons why. It is cheap and/or free which makes it the perfect vehicle for the spam sucking gutter slime link farms which clutter the web. All marching in lock step with the same old same old crap listings. If they would discontinue the free version and raise their $30 version to $50 or $60 with a charge for link removal I think there would soon be a big change in the landscape. I have taken a look at the script on 2 different occasions and both times came away totally unimpressed.

I spent nearly 2 years learning to deal with Indexu (even bought a multiple site license). I really liked it until I recently discovered a very serious flaw which makes it great for link farms but a killer for anyone wishing to run a quality site. They had done/helped with some custom functionality but refused to even discuss this extremely serious flaw.

I am using eSyndicat for my newest project. They have issues (but don't they all) which they have been very good about resolving. Their core code is complex but the template system is quite nice.

Along the way I looked at some of the 'little guys' and think phpweby has great potential but I needed something more mature and don't have the time to wait. I am also using Joomla with the SOBI2 module for a couple projects.

Bottom line is that they all have issues and in reality there is no best for every need.

The above is just a personal opinion based on my experiences and tastes.

Definitely PHPLD, the problem with esyndicat is that they have problems with godaddy hosting.

eSyndicat isn't the problem. Godaddy doesn't use cPanel. That's the main issue. You can't set permissions on files.

To run a real website requires a real host. GD is good at selling domain names but lousy at everything else.

That is about the only plus I can see. I have had no success with either Indexu or eSyndicat when I brought up the subject of a bridge. I am running a WP blog in a sub directory with registrations off which I would do anyway. It is very easy to use simplepie to list latest posts on the categories page.

PHPLD is by far the most used directory script on the Internet - but if you think that's a good thing you'd be wrong. As Harkster put it:
If you count the directories using PHPLD that are actually genuine spam-free directories with strong review policies and measure these against competitors like eSyndicat & Indexu you will find there isn't much difference. PHPLD blows out in numbers of users because there are people that use the free version of the script to start hundreds, and in some cases thousands of directories. The original thread has been removed (finally some moderation), but there is someone @ DP that claimed to own 2500 "directories", of which I recall were all PHPLD. (For those interested, it was discussed here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1607959)

The fact is, with thousands of spammy PHPLD directories, it brings down the reputation of the script. Similar to how the .info spam directories bring down the reputation of .info domain names. That's bad in terms of the human factor, but we've seen how that can be disasters in terms of the search engine factor too. IMO the more you distance yourself from the steaming garbage that is spam-directory-link-farms the better you will be in every sense of the meaning.
