For the most part, hosting has nothing to do with seo, and especially back links.
The only possible thing to be aware of is hosting location. If your old host's server was located in the UK, and your new one is in the U.S and you were getting alot of local UK traffic, you may lose that.

Assuming your domain name and URLs stay the same, this should not hurt your SEO at all if you do it right. Is your new host in the same country? One consideration to keep in mind is that your SEO performance is geo-specific, and if you move to a server in another country, this is likely to improve your presence in that country's SERPs but lower your rankings in the old country.

Apart from that concern, you'll be fine if you:
-- Move to a legit and high-performance server. Make sure it isn't blacklisted -- ask the host to provide you with the server's record. Frequent downtimes and timeouts can hurt your rankings.
-- Test your site on the new server before rollout. Don't take down your site on the old host until it is fully tested, debugged and stable on the new server. (Disallow search indexing on the new server until the official rollout.)
-- Back up your old site so that you can roll back if necessary
-- Make the transition swift, with minimal downtime (otherwise your backlinks may get temporarily broken and lose their "age," which is an important ranking factor)
-- Verify your DNS change, i.e. make sure your DNS to points correcly to your new server. Ideally, set your Time-To-Live (TTL) to the shortest period. Keep in mind that full DNS propagation worldwide takes about 3 full days.
-- Keep the old site files accessible on the old host for some time (ideally, a month) to enable other sites as well as search engines to properly update their caches
-- IMPORTANT: don't forget to re-enable indexing on the new host
-- Don't change any of your URLs. If while moving you discover old URLs that you no longer need, don't simply remove them but 301-redirect them to existing URLs
-- Check all links and make sure they are working. (For example, when moving to or from an Apache server, capital letters in URLs can become an issue)

    I hope this helps!

Your site ranking will be safely if the host you are moving is located in the same country as before. The only problem when you swith web host is the geolocation.

Example - Your site has some ranking in Google.com and already hosted with hosting company based in US. If you have them switched to another hosting company based in US then it's fine. If you have them switched to hosting company based in another country such as Canada, UK, China, etc. then your ranking in US might have a problem.
