Are links in sidebars bad?

Is it true, that backlinks to your site which are placed in sidebars are not a good idea?
I've heard that, first of all, they don't count by SE, and even can heart your website's ranking.
All external links in sidebars are considered by SE as paid links - does it sound like true? Did anyone experience pessimisation because of that?

Not true at all. Any dofollow link is useful from a SEO point of view. Of course that some are better than others but sidebar links are useful.

But if I have a choice where to put link on the website, should I consider this issue?

I also read that the first external link gets more link-juice, didanyone experience this?

I wouldn't agree that "Any dofollow link is useful". If there too many links on the page the last ones do not get any PR.

Not all links placed in sidebar are that bad. It depends on the way it places and which website they are linking to. I would recommend not place them over 10, limited to 5 is the best. You should always aware of how relevance site you are linking to. "All" of them should be make sensed to linking to. If your site is about dog and you are linking to site about poker or viagra then you can guess what would be happened to your site, can't you?

No I don't think so. Links in sidebar are also important, but Google give more weightage to links that are placed within content ie contexual links

Links placed on the side bar are not bad... In fact they are good for PR juices as they always remain on the home page... unlike other links, which gets relegated to the inner pages... after a while!

A link is a link is a link.. Blog roll , footer or contexual , it matters not as long as its a floow link... The higher the PR of the page that the link is on the better , but to get added juice the best links (so we are told) are from your own niche...

Yes most of the people here are giving you the correct impression. Till now it has not been proved by anyone that the outgoing links from a blog/site are hamrful or can penalise the blog/site. So be relaxed and carry on your bookmarking and pinging properly, you will get in top rankings very soon.

I had a guy asking me to remove his link from one of my directories cos it "hurts his rankings". Because his link was new it was displayed on every single page for 2 week before it was pushed off the list by newer links. I said to him not a problem and removed his link. Now the point i want to make here is: There is a sitewide link in that same directory with a car valeting term for which the website in question ranks on the first page of google even though they haven't got many backlinks, haven't got the term in their domain name and are relatively small site so the benefit of sitewide links is obvious. They beat national car valeting providers for their chosen keywords even though they cover only a small area.
