Got a new website? - This is how things work in terms of marketing!

First things first, I have launched many websites in past have done some mistakes, have lost hope for some of them but also learned much from all of this.

So intention for this post is to let the people know specially the beginners the things what i know from my experience about how it works and how to get things going. Also I would strongly recommend to correct me where-ever I am wrong and add more things from your experience so we can get most of this community, so here we go.

Firstly, If you have got a new website, remember one golden rule,

    - Work hard in terms of creating content and expect almost nothing in terms of web traffic from search engines.
    - As soon as your website gets bit older in terms of age, the search engines will start giving the more importance to same content and it will keep you paying back in terms of increasing web traffic.

So for new website the key is

    - Update it daily
    - keep adding new and unique content regularly
    - Don't discourage yourself with your website stats in terms of visitors coming in response to your updates
    - keep up the social bookmarking on digg, buzz and twitter etc but again don't expect much in terms of traffic and followers in beginning but it will pay back as time passes.
    - social bookmarking will also help you at least get indexed in beginning
    - Again if you are using Adsense etc don't get discourage with low earnings in beginning, things will get much batter later on
    - Also keep doing some link building stuff but again as content is king, add unique content and links will automatically come in.
    - Also forget about all kinds of spamming techniques to get the visitors, they will get you little traffic while used but hurt your ranking etc in long term.

    - Finally aim higher but do more hard work to offer unique!

These were very few points about marketing a new website, add much more from your experience so we can learn from each other!

I can add something to this excellent guide:
When you submit your links to Social Networks, don't copy and paste your text from the publication. Google will read that text first on the Social network and will index it there. Later you risk to have duplicated content punishment from Google. Write something unique in the Digg textbox.

Very much valid point, for my blog which is second link in my signature I actually was using same text which is my post title as my social bookmark text in bookmarking sites, it actually hurt me as the bookmarking posts were ranked much higher than the original ones and one thing for sure, if anyone reaches to your bookmark via google, not many people go further to read the full post.

Now I try to use bit different titles for bookmarks and ofcourse different description to keep things unique.

For new sites, best to go with clean SM.

    khu84,

Thanks for the nice write up. It is nice to hear that I am not the only one who struggles to build web traffic. You are correct in everything that you said. You have to provide quality content for the long term.

    Thanks again...:)

"Don't discourage yourself" is probably the most vital point here.

This is why it's very important to pick a niche that you love. This way no matter what your stats are or what your earnings are, you will have the urge to keep on going.

@manofwar: Sorry, what do you mean by clean SM?
@digitalmarketer: yes correct about not being able to be consistent all the time, but as xecutable said choosing the niche you like/love will be one way to go. Also not looking at stats/earnings will help much if they are low. As they get higher they themselves will be motivational force for you!

Thanks all for your feedback, Keep adding to it.

Nice post. I don't agree with the back links coming in naturally. People say build good content and people will link to you. Well, people don't actually do this. People aren't going to just give you a back link for free. There may be some, not many, people that might link to you. people that don't really know much about web design and are just doing it for a hobby, but this is not common anymore. With Google wanting no out bounds or no follows this makes that even more extinct.
Nice thread though. It will be useful to people.

Risk is only duplicated content, because Google punishment by same content twice. So i choose every time use write something unique and put in the Digg.
And, thanks for sharing this information.

@Morris Robin , please refer to Google Busts The Duplicate Content Myth no such punishment.

@gonecrazy Not true. I do have a blogging friend and his blog get links from all over because of his content. He writes and includes similar links to his niche, the others do the same for him. But I have asked him, and he confirmed he hasn't spent a second building backlinks and he is a PR4 so he is doing all right.

However I do agree that doing it manually instead of waiting for someone's "mercy" will speed up the process greatly.

Then he is one in a million or the sites linking to him are the sites he's linking to or maybe track backs. I'm sure there may be some people that do get them but very very few I can almost guarantee that.

Yup I agree, it's perhaps because of his blogging niche. Simply put, Help Yourself, so you wont have anyone to blame later :)

@gonecrazy and @xecutable: Yes the backlinks which are automatically coming in will be much much fewer, I agree with this, but there are people who do link other people.

@Xecutable: I have saw the post you mentioned about duplicate content specially the youtube video near bottom, the thing said by Morris is correct because if you see that video carefully, google don't penalize you if the multiple content is on same domain but in case its spread over many domains, it can hurt you.

@morris: In case of digg even if you give the exactly same title etc, it won't be a problem because digg page is linking to your website telling that this one is original but giving unique title is good in a way that digg post will not compete with origional post when some one searches for keywords those are in your page url.

Anyways if we are writing about a specific topic on our website about which we got the information from another source, it would always be great to link to the original source, Google won't mind it as far as that is relevant also when the writer on original blog/site knows about this link, he/she may think of giving a backlink on same or another post later on. Also some websites automatically search and provide backlinks to sites which are linking in so it automatically balances out.
