Funny how you are asking about VoIP like you don't know a thing about it and yet your signature is about VoIP service.

VoIP is a broad subject but for end users, its simple as a way to communicate through voice for free or for a small fee. Compared with most phone carriers, VoIP is 50 percent cheaper or more. This make VoIP service marketable because cheap communication is what everyone needs. A couple of years ago I was averaging about $30 for my long distance calls alone but when I started using Onesuite VoIP service, it was down to $10. Of course, VoIP is not for everyone but I think sooner or later it will replace your regular landline phones.

Download a software from www.skype.com, and ask your close friend to do the same. Both of you create the Skype account and can start talking, then you'll understand better about VOIP.
Don't forget your headset or a pair of Speaker and Microphone.

Voip stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol.

It allows you to make calls through your broadband/internet. Its also generally cheaper than a main landline telephone, without compromising on quality.

Speaking of quality, it is actually dependent on the speed of you internet connection, have you tried installing a VOIP using a dial up connection, well i guess no need to because we all know that it will be possible to have a quality VOIP service for dial up connection. Always consider internet connection speed, this will vary the quality of your VOIP service.

it's possible on dial up,but you should have at least ADSL.any slow DSL will be enough.
if you already have a landline there are better options such as call waiting or a second line. ;)

i have it because it is cheaper.i pay $10 a month for basic phone service (not including extras and taxes/fees) to my cable company.
phone company wants $30 a month for basic.

VoIP is all about cheap communication and accessibility. To be honest, I never encounter a totally free VoIP service provider. Most providers are just giving trial minutes and some charges for a monthly fee and will say calls are free, how can it be free when you are paying a monthly fee?

Most famous doesn't mean the best. There are tons of VoIP provider thats better and cheaper than Skype. Take Onesuite for example, you can use it with any ATA device and it is SIP based unlike skype where you can only use it on Skype phones.
