Is this healthy?

My awstats for this month reads like this:
    85.8 % - Direct address / Bookmarks
11.14% - Links from an Internet Search Engine
2.6% - Links from an external page

Seems like I got quite a bit of catching up to do on SEO. Or maybe people just love to come back.
The Bookmark traffic seems to be far too much of a percentage.
    Whats your take on this?

    It can mean many things:

    Here's the info that's missing...
    1) How much total traffic are you getting
    2) in what subject and do you DOMINATE the market
    3) Where are you on the SERPs for how many keywords?

If there are still keywords that generate RELEVANT traffic that you can get, then you are under optimized REGARDLESS of your percentage of repeat traffic. One is separate from the other.

Until you dominate the market and as many of the relevant traffic generating keywords as possible, one of your competitors is taking taffic from you.

    Best;

    Eric

I just checked the AWStats again. Under the references it reports only page views (not uniques) and it counts those.
I think the thing started shifting a bit since my forum is gaining a little traction. I guess it could also mean that people are browsing through my forum and posting (its not counting uniques).

Otherwise your analysis is pretty good. I like this:

Bookmark/Direct traffic can be a few things:

    1) From people sending your URL via IM
    2) From people sending your URLs via Email
    3) Type-ins
    4) You refreshing your page.

In my experience, its almost always #4

LOL. At least it was a good laugh.
Believe me, I cannot possbly refresh my page that often.
Also my IP would really stick out (I mean more that it probably already does :D ).

If it's a blog or a forum, you'd be surprise how often you visit your own page. I visit a lot when I'm designing too ("Did that CSS work right?" REFRESH "Nope. Try again" REFRESH).

Also, those stats could be hits. Are you giving us the pages or the hits version? (I'm assuming pages, but you never know).

You may just infact have a very popular site that everyone is pinging "OMG LOL, CHK THIS OUT: " messages to their friends. It's h...nd you should have a much more clear picture.

It could also be the awstats setup of my webhost, I don't know.

However under the section "Connect to site from" (which is what i was citing), I only see page views. This is where I an see the perentages of traffic. I don't know if someone who is on my site and clicks a link on my site will now be under direct access / bookmark?
The number is way too high to be generated by myself. Its way out there.

I get the most pageviews from two ips from this place:
    McColo Corporation MCCOLO (NET-208-66-192-0-1)
                                      208.66.192.0 - 208.66.195.255
    Digital Infinity Ltd DIGITALINFINITY (NET-208-66-195-0-1)
                                      208.66.195.0 - 208.66.195.15
    Code (markup):
But they are not my IP's either. So its defenitely not me. Both combined are also not nearly accounting for the number of pageviews I am seing, so it has to be multiple computers.

Bots are counted seperately in my AWStats. Again, not sure about the whole setup.

The number of uniques is up too, so I am not worried about this too much.

I see a bunch of people flocking in from bitacle.com. Someone tells me that their spider is not counted as such by AWStats. Maybe that is contributing to this phenomenon.

What would be a normal distribution of traffic?

I'm getting similar figures at my site. Since I've been working on it though I suspect a lot of it has to do with me refreshing the page to make sure changes are showing up correctly etc.

As I said above, the numbers are way to high to be generated by me. I think I found (and plugged) the hole.
There was a lot of blogs from thailand, that used my Google button (the one underneath each article, that lets you bookmark the article on google). They simply hotlinked the small button that was not hotlink protected.
I fixed it now and I expet these high numbers to drop off.

It never fails to amaze me what people will link. Next thing you know, they are going to link a placeholder gif from my theme.

it look like you have returning vistor and some new vistor and little links. This might be good unless your clicking yourself. then you need some soe.

O.K., One more time, it wasn't me, the number of pageviews was gigantic.
I found the problem and I fixed it.
I have had several hundred blogs (from blogspot) showing up in my referer, since they were using one of my google buttons. I guess whoever made the theme just used my button.

So instead they are now displaying a banner I made for them, hahaha. Unfortunately if someone clicks the banner they will still end up on their google bookmarks page instead of my website, but lets see what happens.
