Someone from India stole my Paypal account...I got a suspect, please help!

I tried to access my paypal account today but can't login so I tried following the steps suggested by Paypal on the site. First is to call by Phone for them to verify my ownership...In the option, Select Phone, I noticed a different phone number with an area code 91. So I searched google for the country with this area code and my hunch is right: India.

Before that I found out that my email address used for this account is compromised. I can no longer access it so so i clicked the "password recovery" link on Google, and to my surprise, the address that the password is supposed to be sent to, although masked, has an .in extension. Someone has now control of my account! This is crazy! There's another option that Google suggested by filling out a form, but I don't know if it would work or if I could still get back my account.

Yesterday I send $2 to a guy who asked for help in a forum. Call me stupid or naive, I just wanted to help that guy who is apparently an Indian. I asked for his email address so he sent it via PM, then of course I copied the email address and pasted it on my paypal to send the money. I did not notice it was misspelled. The guy sent me another PM apologizing because he misspelled the address. xxxxx@gamil instead of xxxxx@gmail. Negligent error really so I canceled my first payment and resent the money. The guy thanked me profusely after and posted this on his thread.

I am infuriated, this can't be happening. Please help. I am immobilized. I need my account back.

    first of all,

.in email does NOT mean that the individual is an indian, it only means that someone made an email add on an indian site.

Secondly, yes, if someone has a 91 phone code, it COULD be an indian, however, since it ( phone number)does not need to be verified, so we can't be sure of that.

by sending 2$ to someone, they cannot get your paypal or email password.

it appears that you are victim of a phishing scam.

and as i know it, most of the phishing scams originate from eastwhile soviet block or china ( due to extremely negligent laws there)

Indians are certainly capable of a phishing scam, however, IF someone wanted that, they wouldn't have been asking for 2$ in forum, and risk exposing his identity.

it seems to me that you have the same password in dp/paypal/email - there are a lot of phishing attempts on dp though. ( comes via pm, with same login form.) always check browser status bar, it will show you the correct site.

I happen to read some articles about paypal hacking and the best way for you to do is to call paypal immediately about your problem and asked them that your paypal account got hacked. You need to call them immediately coz I am pretty much sure that you will get some solutions to them...

Yeah, I reported it immediately to Google and Paypal.

The hacker (Indian) is not the guy in the forum but some teenager who just wants to apply his skills on someone. I already got access to my Paypal.

Thanks for your helpful posts, competent and bomber. I learned my lesson.
