Im wondering, what's white hat SEO to be exact? Directory submissions, article submissions, and that's it? Because paid links obviously aren't white hat and even 3 ways or 4 ways link exchange aren't part of white hat SEO either (because they meant to cheat). So what are part of white hat SEO? I heard a lot of getting relevant backlinks, but how to get relevant backlinks in white hat way other than paying for the links or do 3-4 ways link exchange?
White hat simply means that you abide by all terms and conditions of the search engine while marketing your website. This includes on page optimization, high quality content creation, and social bookmarking.
Paid links definitely are white hat - Google offers them after all, as do Yahoo and Bing Getting relevant backlinks in volume is way too much of a hard task - leave it up to others by developing 'linkworthy' content.

Really I consider any type of spamming, keyword spamming, cloaking, link farms, too much recip linking to be blackhat
White hat means natural links, ethical ways to promote, do not spam, no keyword stuffing, no copying, no cheat, not hiding anything from crawlers, no backdoors etc.
