Anybody can help me with this?

i read from Wordpress.org that when you install 3.0 over a WP single installation, the multi sites feature will not be enable. you need a tool to enable it. i dont want to to a clean install of 3.0. i want to upgrade my existing WP to 3.0

Well, since the official current release is 2.9.2 and 3.0 isn't due to be out until April, I don't think anyone can help you.

But, if it's anything like MU, I just installed MU on a domain that had a single user installation, but not over it.
I backed it up, deleted it and installed MU clean with a new database, then imported my old posts into the new installation.

    thanks for commenting!

i am running on 3.0 alpha and would like to do some testing on the upgrade from 2.9.2 to 3.0. in that case i think i have to wait.

i want to test if the 3.0 multisite version allow me to host at domain.com while the installation files are in domain.com/wp. it seem like i cannot do that with WPMU. so was wondering if the 3.0 upgrade will allow it?

    you have any idea?

If they are anything alike, it seems that it operates best on domain.com. Everything that I have read about MU, and if you are using Buddypreess, suggests that it works better on the root, not in a subdomain or folder.which makes sense , since user blogs are created on subdomains.or folders.

There are many bugs to be fixed and supposedly, on the next release, upgrading will easier than what I had to go through. Also Budddypress has a few issues that need to be worked out as well.

all these problems u mention, i am facing some inconvenience when i install in a sub folder, domain.com/wp. i have no problem with subdomain,

install in subfolder, need me to refresh my permalink when i update or install plugin. buddypress also have navigation problem when i install WP in subfolder. but the release version 1.2.1 solve the problem.

install WP in the public_html is actually quite a messy thing to do.

I have it installed on the root and except for a few problems that Ihve now fixed, all seems to be functioning correctly. I can see how installing it on a folder would be problems, they actually recommend that you don't do that especially if you are going to use Buddypress with it.

There's still a lot to be done. When 3.0 is done and launched , they may have come up with an easier way to install, or update existing installations.

I'm using MU and Buddypress to get my feet wet with it, you are probably never going to get a good install from the beta without being a programmer or Word press developer because there are still issues and files that need to be corrected and edited. It's not ready yet.

    thank for warning me.

in the WPMU, when u install buddypress plugin, and to activate it, it says 'activate network'. what does it mean?

i am considering to reinstall to WPMU and move all my blogs to the WPMU installation. sigh!

I don't know, I am still new to this as well. I don't remember seeing that when I installed it, but remember, you have to install MU on a new database.

I would wait to move any blogs over until 3.0 comes out and we know what we are dealing with. We are in between releases right now and currently, what we have (MU/Buddypress) has issues.

I only installed MU now on a dead blog to play around with it and see all of the functions and make sure that I can actually do what I want.

I am still having issues, most recently my wildcard settings are off, so all of my child blogs are inaccessible...host is working on it.

Too soon to make any big changes to existing blogs, especially if they are popular or are making money.

i am also facing these problems but i dont have the luxury to wait till WP 3.0 official release.

    my options are:
    1. install WPMU and move all my blogs to WPMU and later upgrade to WP 3.0
    and
    2. install as many WP single installations as i need. when 3.0 is out i consolidate all to 3.0

i think option 1 is more ideal for me.

as for buddypress, i m starting to lose confidence. i m still doing my homework and see how i can make the best use of it without so many technical problems to use.

MU is working and has been for some time, people are using it everyday, however, many of the successful MU sites are run by people or companies that have a team, or have far superior programming skills than I do.

I also noticed that most successful MU webmasters host their own sites...meaning they have their own servers. Most of my problems have been communicating with my host what I need them to do. Hosting companies are in for a rude awakening come April when every WP webmaster wants to go Multi User...I'm hoping the installation process is better then so it doesn't require editing server files...which anyone with shared hosting does not have access to.

You can see some working MU/Buddypress sites on the Buddypress Forum

The problem as I see it is Buddypress, with MU. Right now you can run Buddypress on a single installation WP but it doesn't have the community blogs option, which to me is the whole point.

My MU/Buddypress site is almost there, I'm beta testing it right now. Can't complain too much since I only downloaded MU and Buddypress 6 days ago..before that, I never even considered them, just read about them.

I don't think you should loose any confidence, I am pretty confident that is about to usher in a whole new era for Wordpress, we are just a little ahead of it...a lot of people are waiting to see what happens.

No, what I'm saying is that MU requires certain setting to the server so that users can build on subdomains and so that they are recognized, I think they call it the 'Wildcard' setting.
If you are on shared hosting, normally you wouldn't have access to the files that need editing, so you will have to ask your host.
Other problems that you may incur is some hosts turn of PHP mailing to cut down of possible spam sites, you need to have mailing turned on, and not blocked, for all of the features of MU to work.

All I am saying is to make sure you have a good hosting company if you are on a shared server and a decent sized account. I don't think a semi-popular MU site will run successfully on a basic $10 hosting plan with limited bandwidth and a small storage space.
