I am currently in the middle of planning my next huge business opportunity. I've been thinking of allowing each person to have their own personal page, such as www.theirpersonalpage.mydomainname.com How is this possible? Would I just be better off using PHP and allowing the business name to be after the domain name such as www.yourdomain.com/businessname? I see facebook and myspace use the new technique without subdomains, but is there a way to still give out subdomains EASILY? What are the ups and downs of each? I normally do not go into this kind of stuff, so I really don't know anything about this. Help would be greatly appreciated.
what you want to give with subdomains ? u want to give file access to users ? mail access to users ? then u need to look some hosting panel/script if you just want to give pages then best is to try with wordpressMU mu.wordpress.org a simple cms to manage users in blog format
Why would anyone in their right mind want to buy a subdomain? If they are out to make money on the internet then they need to brand themselves with their own domain name. They are not going to do that using a subdomain. All they will brand is the main domain ie your domain. Nice little reuse to get others to do your work for you though I have to admit. That is if anyone is sucker enough to take you up on it.
The short of it is, this is possible. You will need to google for things like "subdomain script" etc. Also there are already tons of free subdomain services out there. I recognize "big" is a relative term, and it may be just one part of your project, but if all you're going to be doing is giving away subdomains, or making people buy them, it probably will not pan out to be some big service, at least not by my definition of the word big in this context.
us.com was able to pull it off and have sold quite a bit of domains... anyways i think he is thinking about giving them away as selling them wouldnt even be an option UNLESS you had a PREMIUM domain like RealEstate.com so people coudl get Chicago.RealEstate.com or Clubs.com where clubs could buy, Clubs.com/Miami good luck with your venture and if I have learned anythign on the internet there are ALWAYS suckers..
you are true us.com uk.com etc are selling subdomain but the fact is they are cheating users think that as tlds the users never have subdomain ownership if those domains sold to third party they are screwed
hence the last line of confirming the fact there are suckers out there.... I actually once had a guy who was after a dotUS of mine, a Premium 4 letter word... He was buying the domain for a large scale development. After some debating back and forth he told me that if I didnt agree on his price he was going to just go and buy the keyword.us.com. I told him he shoudl go do that, then i told him he should go build a house on a piece of property he doesn't own too...
This is the point the user remains a user but never owns the sub domain. They can be kicked off at anytime. When you consider the time and effort it takes to build traffic to your site you are far better off buying a domain name of your own. It is a small investment compared to what you could lose in revenue. Sooner or later you are going to want your own domain anyway (assuming you are serious about the internet that is) so why not start out with it and build your traffic from the beginingt to it, rather than having to start out from zero again.
