I've had wonderful luck with twitter to increase my traffic. I may have a bit of an advantage since my blog is very much oriented toward my geographical area (and thus I can find followers). Still, there is a community for just about any subject on twitter. I use an automatic tweet tool (called Twitter Tools--it's a plugin for wordpress blogs). Whenever I write a post, it gets tweeted. I make sure to do more than just tweet about my own stuff though. I retweet other people's work and thank them when they retweet mine. I work on a sense of community, and that has helped my site traffic. I had a moment of insight when I realized that many people look to twitter to build a community.
