Link Building - Is it ok to build upon another's template?

Discussion in 'Link Development' started by adell50, Mar 5, 2010.

As part of my link building strategy, I am prepared to build a wordpress template for my audience.

I am curious on how this practice is looked upon if the template is built upon an existing template (credit and links will be given to the original developer, of course).

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Many thanks!

This is not the best way to build links. The links you do end up getting will not help to improve your rankings at all.

While you might get a lot of links (and that's a mighty big "if" considering thousands of people have been doing this for quite some time), the characteristics required for effective link building will not be included simply by including a link in the footer of the template.

There is actually quite a bit to consider when building links if you want to get top results. The website in my signature has free info that shows what it takes to get top rankings with effective link building techniques, if you want to find out more.

If they dont help at all, then why do authors of templates, et al, put a link in the code back to their site at all? Just curious..

I visited your site..thanks for the lead

That links is basically present in order to the the author credit. It's still a live link, and good for human visitors - especially if the visitor likes the design and wants to get one for themselves. It's a good link, just not good for getting rankings in the search engines.

That's fine. You are free to believe whatever you want, right? :) I hope it works for you, if in fact you decide to try this out.

But actually this method was debunked quite a few years ago. Anything so easy to detect from Google would not be able to deliver high rankings, at least not today (maybe 10 years ago).

I dont see why it would be frowned upon..Every site out there that is designed by another firm has back links in one way or another, and google see s them all

This thought also applies to many firms creating software or apps that have embedded links...google sees those too

Even no follows..googles sees them...no one but the googlers know the full extent, but they see em...especially now that real time search is a reality...

I never said it was "frowned upon". In the first response on this thread I wrote "This is not the best way to build links. The links you do end up getting will not help to improve your rankings at all."

It won't harm your website. It just won't help it to get higher rankings in Google's search results.

It seems that I made an assumption that your goal was to get higher rankings, when actually your question was simply "is it OK"? To that, I would answer, "Yes. It is OK".

    Sorry about the confusion.

To me link building is all about the time and effort that each type of link takes you. For some of us that means article writing is easy as well as forum posting. Other enjoy making videos. For some of us (and this is much more uncommon) you're going to be able to really, really program. If that's the case and a great Wordpress template isn't going to take a long period of time....go for it.

It's a high risk/high reward type project, but I wish I had the skills to pull it off.

If people don't remove your link AND your template ends up being used on future high ranking sites, then you can see nice results. I would assume that most people will remove the link, though.

@Amrkase - Thanks for the encouragement! Im not completely sure I can pull it off alone, but I dont think a couple hundred bucks is toooo risky to see some links...Id be providing a service that folks could really use and perhaps getting a few links in return...in any event, cheers!

@LinkBlast..Not sure a lot of people would remove them..it wouldnt be over being or anything and how often have you seen a website that didnt quote an author or designer that didnt design it themselves....either way, thanks for the tip!

I have come across a few instances of people editing and removing the credit link in the footer of wordpress themes. So this may not be the best way to build back links to your site, but if it remains then it can generate some human traffic from people checking out the theme author website.

some use the technique in creating template and give it away for free, they put their link on the template as part of their link building campaign.

I highly recommend that you modify any template you use to be as unique as possible to avoid having duplicate content on your website.
If an author offers the option to purchase a 'branding free' template, then do so. If he / she doesn't, remove it by force.

SE's are starting to get very strict by all the content spinning going on lately so you'd better (re)act accordingly.
Also, make sure to add 'noindex' tags to any CSS or other styling options as this may be included in a negative sense towards your website's rating without your knowledge!

it's okay, because that's how most templates are build, they are build upon something else, just make sure it looks unique enough

What he means (I think), is that it's not going to be worth it. If it was so easy, everyone would have been doing it.
But of course it helps the rankings!
