Real open directory - what would happen?

I am playing with the thoughts ...

What would happen if a new real open directory is created. The login and password to the admin is written on the site and anyone can insert, approve and delete links as they wish. A possibility to change password would be closed and regular backups would be done. How would it go? Wikipedia made it ...

Or if the same would be done to a big directory that is already existing.

Any thoughts on this? Should I try?

How would you keep spammers from deleting and mass adding their own sites?

I think it can be done, Jim. But it has to be something that hasn't been done before :)

    Exactly.

Something like a mix between www.hedir.com and www.wikidweb.com, we are talking about a big project ... But I think it is possible.

:D Do you have or can get 2-4 full time programmers that are fast and can be paid with indian rates? I have one I can use but I don't think that is enough. Probably it has to be programmed from scratch and factually I don't have the time - I should be working with clients now  . I have some ideas on how it could work.

    Its good idea :)
but i think its work of a honest group not of single person.

Why not make team of 10 or 15 members and then start this projects ;)

    You can take me.

What - beyond a normal directory script - do you need? I am curious as to why it would have to be programmed from scratch?

Seems like a pretty ambitious project.

    Hehe.

Look at www.hedir.com, users are rating and writing about the submissions before they get approved. A full point system.

If I would make this big project I would make a new script. I would not rip off for example phpLD that they have worked on for 3 years to make mine - that would be bad business.

Hehe, thanks. But I am not sure if I would have time to do it.

seems like a good idea that could take off
but their is too many selfish spammers out their that WILL try and exploit it
so why not make users signup and have their own ID
    log all editing
and have editor ranks (with benifits) some type of revenue sharing?
you could incorperate some kind of digg features also..

Yes, user signups is a must and the rest that you write are very good ideas.

I think you'd have to consider how it would be different from a regular directory made free-for-all. Also consider that if it took off, people would develop bots to add their own sites and remove the sites of their rivals.

And who would fund it? I can see the rationale behind funding Wikipedia, but I can't see people reaching into their pockets for something like this. And if anyone can add any content they like, you couldn't put up any contextual advertising.

A similar project to what you have in mind might also be aboutus.org which is really taking off. I keep finding that site in the SERPs for random terms all the time and to be honest I hate it already.

Good call on aboutus.org - they look very similar to what is being suggested. Wow - and popular too.

Okay, so it seems that most of the ideas are being done in one way or another - seems like there needs to be a NEW idea to make this really interesting.

    Hi,
I'm the founder/owner of Wikidweb.com. I was wondering, what would you do differently? I'd love to have the help/feedback/participation. I've written all the modifications myself, and I've taken a lot of feedback (from forums and emails) into account.

I've been researching Aboutus.org (which I'm not affiliated with) and there seems to be a lot of negative comments. I think most people object to the republication of their Whois info, and it rubs them the wrong way that Aboutus scrapes content.

(Just FYI, the approximately 12,000 listings in Wikidweb were added by users, not a single one was scraped and I used no robots except a single check to verify that a submitted url is valid.)

    Warm Regards,
    Aerik
