Really? NO - This is a huge misconception... For anyone who has actually done some SEO they'll know that link diversity is more important than the NUMBER of inbound links. The fastest way to get black marked from Google (aside from cloaking) is to have a disgustingly poor link portfolio coming from untrustworthy sites. Building links takes time and requires relationship building.. not just simply dropping links on blogs and forums.

Back to the original question - what is more important, content or links? You cannot answer this without more information...

You can rank first position for a non-competitive phrase with NO links, and even poor content... it's all relative to the keyword phrase your trying to optimize for! What's relative for your market? Is anyone else competing on your keyword phrase, is there any traffic on it?

Inbound links and keywords are only part of the Google ranking algorithm and I suggest a lot of the posters here read up on some search ranking factors. Try David Mihm's Blog, that's the best layout of approximate ranking factors.

    Good luck.

Even 5 articles with a lot of backlinks (anchor targeted) can do wonders if the site is not new and backlinks are quality otherwise sandbox.

Both them are very important for a website. But I think you need good content first and then build the links .

I agree, but it depends on what you are targetting. My blog can now instantly rank top 5 for some targeted longtail keywords just from the content alone.

In SEO, Both are having importance..

:- Great content has a better ability to attract great links than low quality content.
:- Low quality content with lots of great links will outrank high-quality content with few links everytime. We've all seen thousands of examples of this in the SERPs.

Links are 85% of SEO, content has some value but links are much much more important. Do some research around your keywords in Google and look at the number/quality of backlinks and the top ten results will, most likely, have lots of quality backlinks.

Despite the many articles, blogs, and books written on the topic, there are really only three main areas of Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

    1. Structure The web language used, navigation, and rich media all have an impact on whether the search engines are able to crawl and understand the theme of your web site.

    2. Content – Search engine spiders are really quite dumb. Your web content needs to match-up with the user’s query or your site won’t be found.

    3. Links – The search engines look at the quantity, quality, and relevance of the links pointing to a web site.

    Linking strategies

    1. Each link to your site from another site is a “vote” for your web page to rank higher in Google’s search results.

    2. Obtain links from business partners, suppliers, clients, industry blogs, and news media. The link should preferably use “anchor text” that includes the keywords you are hoping your web page will rank for in Google. For example; instead of a link back to your site that says “Click Here” more beneficial would be a link that includes the text “Desktop Computers” (or your targeted keyword).

    3. The same goes for the way you link from one of your pages to another—your internal links. Use keywords in your anchor text and avoid using links in images or ambiguous anchor text such as “click here” or “read more.”

    4. If you do use a lot of image, JavaScript, or FLASH links in your site’s navigation, consider adding a “sitemap.html” page. This page should be linked-to from your homepage—using a regular text link—and should include text links to all of your pages. This will help Google discover and crawl your entire site.

I consider content and backlinks to be the best... only when they go hand in hand with each other. One would be useless in the absence of other!
What is the use of having very good content if your site is not networked well and nobody comes to read your material... and vice-versa.

    Regards,
