US Congress panel accuses Turkey of Armenian 'genocide' Armenian-Americans have lobbied for official use of the word "genocide" A US congressional panel has described the killing of Armenians by Turkish forces during World War I as genocide, despite White House objections The resolution was narrowly approved by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Turkey, a key US ally, responded by recalling its ambassador in Washington for consultations. It has fiercely opposed the non-binding resolution. ........... ............................... "The White House had warned that the vote would harm reconciliation talks between Turkey and Armenia.".... What a hypocracy. Playing politics and making profits on an issue such as genocide, come on dems and reps., it is a shame to keep denying the masacre of over 1.2mln Armenians. There are thousands of documented proofs that the Turks commited genocide on the Armenians. How far down can you 22 politicians who voted against it can go for selfish interests? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8550765.stm Now I guess the Turks will start a DDOS attack on US government web sites...
Not really. They're only repeating back what Turkish officials have threatened. The truth is, Obama, Hillary, Pelosi -- have all called it genocide. The next step to pass this would be to send it to the House for voting, but they will probably try to avoid that from happening.
Damn it. I knew I read it somewhere. It was on the Obama's campaign website. Not only did he call it a genocide, he promised he would recognize the Armenian genocide. On the CNN website today it said... I think the concern for Armenian-Turkey relations is legit, the US is thinking of present day concerns, including the desire to have Turkey as an ally. Even so, I just can't help but feel very disappointed.
I will quote a few parts from a recent article Bad things happen when empires fall apart Full article: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article7053138.ece Norman Stone is Professor Emeritus of Modern History at the University of Oxford and head of the Russian-Turkish Institute at Bilkent University, Ankara The resolution is consistently brought to the Congress from California. And what is California? One of the most strategic states in the U.S. Elections where wealthy Armenian diaspora is more populated than anywhere else in the U.S. I suppose noone has any oppositon that there's an undeniable amount of corruption in the U.S. Congress. These events aren't as simple as a bunch of politicians who vote Yes or No according to how their advisors tell them to, to decide. I shall remind you that a congress who hasn't recognized the genocide carried out against the native americans by their very own nation, or never took those who are responsible of the Iraq war which was started based on illegimate reasons and false accusations resulting in over a million deaths and billions of dollars loss of American tax payer money, to court, is everything but credible to make this judgement. This is not something like politics vs history, it's about politics vs politics. The numbers in the congress vote only shows which lobby is more powerful at that particular year. For example a few years ago the result was 40 Yes's over 7 No's, now something like 23-22, huh? Perhaps it will be 30 No's against 12 Yes's in the next voting, which will again mean nothing "at all". It is more important at this stage for U.S. to focus on real problems in the world today such as the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagorno-Karabakh where Armenia illegaly occupies 20% of Azerbaijan, rather than attempts to please a few hundred thousand wealthy Armenian voters over events they have absolutely no idea about. Turkey is trying to solve the problems with Armenia recently. Turkey offered to set up a joint History commission and opened all of it's archives regarding the WW1 era. Armenia on the other hand, refuses to make their archives public and refuses the history commission idea so far. I believe these will be dealt with in the close future along with the closed borders and the Karabakh issue. Meanwhile if U.S. has lost it's politic vision and chooses a few voters over a long time ally, Turkey, it's very doubtful who will lose more in what is called the new world order. And oh, don't pay so much attention to what Obama said during the campaign, Clinton said it too, if it's about votes and contributions, they will say anything, regardless of which party they represent or what their background is, it's about the election system and general corruptness of it, pretty irrelevant to this issue. If you count what promises the president have unkept, or more importantly, what nonsense they utter during their campaigns, it will be one giant encyclopedia.
Thank you very much dear LeoSeo. There are some people who hide themselves behind other races, religions and societies, then attack others. This is how they lived throughout the history. Of course Turkey made problems for them by standing for justice and development in the middle east against their corruption. Notice that I didn't speak about jews here, I am so liberal that jews speak for themselves in my post.
Respect to Argentina, Armenia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Lebanon, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay, Vatican City, and Venezuela for officially recognizing the Armenian genocide for what it was.
It is real bad for one of the greatest countries in the world to not recoginize the genocide on the Armenians. I guess Turkey's plan is to just keep denying it for as long as possible, so they can get away cheap after so many years have passed. It shows also another thing, their politicians have no sense of honesty and respect of human rights and international law.
Politeteen, there is not even a single one democratic muslim country US is. The politicians lie, that's why they have not recognized the armenian genocide because denying the truth fits their political agenda. You don't even have the courage to accept the historical facts. The truth cannot be always nice.
I already said that not all the Ottoman's governments were following Islam exactly, some were as muslims as the nowadays Islamic governments who care much about their chairs, but use Islam for political issues. We had the bad leaders and the good ones. You can check this in my old posts. US need to condemn Israel for its crimes before the world in Gaza rather than giving the full protection for it, if it really care about huminity. The Priority is to start judging the criminals of our world, this is the logic. Why is it only Saddam who needed to be put to death while other criminals are not even labled as terrorists?
"Only one Turkish government, that of Damad Ferit Pasha, has ever recognized the Armenian genocide." "The Armenian Genocide was condemned at the time by representatives of the British, French, Russian, German, and Austrian governments" Phrases like these crack me up, during WW1 people supposedly used a word that was coined in 1940's. LOL It's as much absurd as saying George Washington used Google Maps in wars.
Anyone interested, please consider signing this petition to recognize the Armenian genocide. -- Petition Thanks
